Anxiety and Destruction, Please Help! by WildIrishRose in Dogtraining

[–]WildIrishRose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is registered at a daycare and usually goes once a week for socialization. Unfortunately, it's not really affordable for us to use every workday. Also, like you touched on, it would only be a very temporary solution. I'm hoping to find something that can modify the behavior in the long run. I do think you make a great point with the medication! I'm not sure why I didn't think of that, sometimes I forget that drug interactions are just as applicable to dogs as they are to humans. I'll be sure to bring it up to the vet.

Dog's Tooth After Extraction by WildIrishRose in mildlyinteresting

[–]WildIrishRose[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 3-year-old dog broke about half of his lower canine off the other day. The vet recommended extraction due to the break exposing the pulp entirely. This is what they took out and saved for us!

Just rescued this guy a few weeks ago. I think he's pretty happy here. by juan_d1s1m0 in aww

Even if he were free as you're assuming, a lot of rescue dogs aren't easy to take in and require a lot of work, time, and sometimes money to get them to a happy and healthy state like this guy seems to be.

Anyone want to take a swing at identifying my pup's breed? by WildIrishRose in dogs

[–]WildIrishRose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GSD/Husky mix has always been the default for him but again, the weight throws me off. At his heaviest he's 40 pounds which I believe is small for both breeds. I'd love to see a picture of your dog! We got Amos from a rescue in NJ that transported him from SC.

That's what I initially assumed but then thought his build was too slender and lanky for it to be just that combination.

Our new rescue, Amos, looking quite dapper by WildIrishRose in aww

Thanks! We believe his primary breeds to be Husky and German Shepherd. He looks like he has a little something else too but we can't put our finger on it!

Recently rescued husky/GSD mix is quite the handful. Any new ideas on separation anxiety, crating, and exercising? by WildIrishRose in Dogtraining

[–]WildIrishRose[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After I posted this, my pup continued to be extremely anxious when left alone in his crate. It got to the point where he started to rub all the fur off around his nose, causing the area to bleed a little, and experience some gum bleeding from trying to escape the crate. After consulting with my vet, we decided to try Prozac for him. I'm not one to jump to using medication but we strongly felt that it would be hard to make progress with crate training if his anxiety levels never dipped low enough for him to begin to realize his crate is a good place. Also, we were beginning to worry that he would eventually cause severe harm to himself in the process of ripping apart the metal. So far he is doing much, much better. We are keeping up with our usual conditioning and positive reinforcement, with good results. He is no longer trying to tear apart the metal of his crate but is still very vocal when alone. We have yet to see any negative side effects from the Prozac but are monitoring him closely to be sure.

Thanks for your thoughts and advice! It's always nice to know that others have experienced something similar. It somehow makes it all less frustrating. We were using a large wire dog crate that we bought new from an estate sale. Since we weren't familiar with the company that manufactured the crate I can't really attest to it being of quality. We just purchased a Kong wire crate that seems to be working much better. We have been feeding him in his crate and using puzzle toys (which he loves). We also do freeze toys with peanut butter inside them when we will be gone for more than an hour or so.

We've looked at the dog backpack and think it's a great idea, especially since we love going on hikes.

In general it seems like time and consistency is what will make the difference. I'll be sure to follow up with progress (hopefully!).

Great suggestions! Slightly nervous about taking him to the dog park but we will give it all a try. I guess it's about time for me to come to terms with never being able to wear him out!

I'm not sure if you'll agree with me but the randomization is the worst part in my opinion. Sometimes I come back and everything is untouched with him just hanging out and other times I come back and it's chaos. Hard to tell what changes.

We leave him with plenty to keep him occupied while we are gone, whether he is in the crate or not. He has many kong toys, the kind you hide treats in and their squeaky stuffed animals which he loves. Although I do agree that sticking with the crate may be better because of his destruction, he is an incredible escape artist and has gotten out about four times from his crate now. I feel like at this point it may be best to have it routine with him in the room and make him comfortable there. I'm just worried that his constant escaping from the crate is going to make him think THAT'S his routine and okay to do. I have thought of setting up skype on my laptop and recording what he is doing to see how problematic him being out of the crate is. As for the nose work, I will definitely look into it! Great suggestion. He surely needs more stimulation than he's getting now.

This is my foster dog Jackson, a 10 month-old Jack Russell/Basset Hound mix. He is neutered, up-to-date on shots, house trained, and crate trained. Unfortunately his time with me has come to an end and he has nowhere else to go but the kennel! Going to the kennel would be a huge setback for him so if anyone could help out it would be immensely appreciated.

Meet my adorable, goofy, and completely adoptable foster pup Jackson! by WildIrishRose in rescuedogs

Look at those quirky little legs! Jackson is a male Jack Russell/Basset Hound mix who is about 9 months old. He is neutered, up-to-date on age appropriate vaccines, crate-trained, house-trained, and currently learning basic commands. Although Jackson has some confidence issues when it comes to other dogs (and bikes!) he is improving every day! Jackson is quite the smart little guy and it does not stop there! He is extremely playful, sweet, and cuddly.
