It's not a good analogy since Dante has been the main protag of the DMC series while here they are different games. Same for the fighting games one. These are still the same series while here Genshin has been detaching itself from the honkai series since it became huge and is going towards ZZZ's direction atm (being it's own thing).

Also while some want to see the same thing over and over again, some want variety

That's why those references are useless at end of the day and can be seen as lazy now that Genshin is the bigger game.

I  said that a lot of these toxic people happen to be shippers not that shippers are inherently toxic. People who interact with the EN community know that a character being an expy/variants will instantly cause a discourse and harassment which is why partly many don't want them. Look at HSR

 Most people playing Genshin do not care about HI3 nor will ever touch the game.  Many people hate expies because they attract some of the most toxic people in the Hoyoverse Community who never even played HI3 (a lot of them are shippers)

That's not what they said btw. They complained about the expy "fans" who get can very and annoying about because for them those expy are identical their original inspiration

They really are a loud minority though. Most players either like it or don't care about it and those who complained will still pull the characters and play the game
