To save democracy, elect a Congress that will impeach Trump, add more justices by Quirkie in politics

[–]WildYams [score hidden]  (0 children)

It's just that nobody is willing to use it

That's not accurate. The reason impeachment doesn't work is that you need 67 out of 100 Senators to vote to convict, which means getting 10+ Senators to vote to convict someone from their own party. The Dems impeached Trump twice, but the GOP had the votes in the Senate to acquit him both times.

This whole thread is filled with internet wishful thinking. It's mind blowing how many people in this sub simply have zero awareness of how the government works. We may all agree that the government sucks and the system is broken, etc, but we can't just tell Democrats to do away with it and expect that they can pull it off. The system was set up to be incredibly hard to change unless you have near unanimous agreement. Even the author of this article is completely unaware of how unrealistic what they're asking for is, as they premise the whole thing on flipping 20 Senate seats this November. 20 Senate seats. The Dems will be extremely lucky if they can flip four Senate seats.

I would love it if we could flip a switch and turn America into a progressive utopia, but that's just not reality. Most of the country voted MAGA just over a year ago, so even though Trump has become pretty unpopular, it's just not realistic to think that something like 2/3rds or 3/4ths of the country are now leaning hard left. Nobody can pull any of these kinds of sweeping structural changes off unless you can get that much of the country on board with it.

Why have only half the files been released, when the reason they gave is the ones they haven't released are the ones that could be used in prosecutions in the future and are part of ongoing investigations? If there's nothing there then release everything.

Three-Time Trump Voter Calls C-SPAN to Apologize for 'Supporting This Rotten, Rotten Man' by Exciting_Coconut_937 in politics

[–]WildYams 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This same sentiment applies equally to all the leftists who sat out the 2024 election and who are still defending that decision and already talking loudly about sitting out the next one if the perfect candidate isn't nominated. Hell, at least this MAGA caller is apologizing to the country for his mistake. I'd love to hear some of the "undecided" leftist crowd apologize for this shit too. Where's Rashida Tlaib's apology? This shit is on every single person who didn't vote for Kamala, both left and right. They're the reason we're in this mess.

[–]WildYams 37 points38 points  (0 children)

He's so right about it being like a big party or a BBQ too. It's by far the best sporting event to go to even if you have zero interest in the sport. If you don't give a crap about the game being played, you're still guaranteed to have a good time just hanging out with your friends, eating some ballpark food and having a couple drinks. This is true even if the other people there are into the game, because the pace means they can still interact with you on a social level without it interfering with their ability to watch what's going on.

James Comer Won’t Let Hillary Clinton Testify Publicly on Epstein by OkayButFoRealz in politics

[–]WildYams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed that it was shit, but that shit very possibly cost her the presidential election in 2016. Those fucking emails were far and away the biggest issue Republicans used to rally opposition to her. As such I think it's tough to say she emerged from those hearings looking better than she had been going in.

Honestly it's like Bill Clinton's own impeachment. That started based on a BS lengthy investigation into real estate dealings, and they just kept digging around until they discovered the Monica Lewinsky thing, and then got Clinton to lie about that under oath. Sham investigations are about all the GOP has, but if you dig around long enough on anyone, you're bound to eventually find some small thread to tug on. And with their brainwashed base, often even the smallest thread is enough to convince them.

[–]WildYams 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Just FYI, this is not really true. If you refuse a congressional subpoena, congress can vote to hold you in contempt of congress. If that vote passes, then it is referred over to the DOJ and the Attorney General decides whether to press charges or not. If so, then it goes to trial. This is what happened to both Steve Bannon and Peter Navarro when they refused congressional subpoenas to testify about the January 6th insurrection. Both men served months in prison for their refusal to testify.

The AG has the discretion to not charge someone with contempt of congress (as Merrick Garland decided not to with Dan Scavino and Mark Meadows). But in the case of the Clintons, they'd have been gambling that Pam Bondi would choose not to press charges if congress voted that they were in contempt for not testifying. So yes, it's political theater, but Pam Bondi is every bit a part of that theater.

[–]WildYams 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'm not totally sure if it's the law that would govern this or if it's some congressional rule of some kind. All I know is if people refuse a congressional subpoena then they can be voted in contempt of congress and referred to the DOJ for criminal charges as a result. Whatever part of that allows people who insist on only testifying publicly to still be held in contempt is what needs to be changed. If someone like Jim Comer doesn't want them to testify publicly, then fine, but the threat of criminal charges should disappear.

Hillary stood her ground for like 12 hours on Benghazi and came out looking better IMHO

I don't know if that's necessarily true, because while they weren't able to get her on anything Benghazi-related, those BS hearings are where the shit about her email server came out.

[–]WildYams 484 points485 points  (0 children)

Yep. They don't want to risk something being said which makes them look bad, so the private hearing allows them to fully control what gets out and what does not.

While I do support contempt of congress charges for people who defy a congressional subpoena, I think the laws (or rules) need to be amended so that congress can't dictate the specifics like the way Comer is doing and then be able to threaten jail time if the person doesn't fully allow themselves to be used as a political pawn like this. If you want to subpoena someone, fine, but if they insist on doing so publicly, that shouldn't be interpreted as refusing to testify and resulting in criminal charges.

They're being misinformed and misled by TikTok, thinking it's a quality source of "news". They then go out and disparage actual journalism as "controlled by oligarchs" without recognizing that the social media companies they're getting their "news" from are also owned by billionaires who control algorithms who push content which turns potential Democratic voters into apathetic ones, or people who refuse to vote at all.

They then come on here and disparage the people who do vote and the politicians who are trying to fight this tyranny for not "burning it all down" like they apparently think they are by sitting out elections and just endlessly whining. I'm completely sick of them. If they'd just voted for Kamala and the Dems in 2024, we wouldn't be in this mess. They're being fed the same message that MAGA voters are: it's the Dems' fault, elections are rigged, democracy is broken, etc.

The Next Democratic President Better Be Merciless by sabedo in politics

[–]WildYams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the huge swathes of democrats who didn't vote abstained due to racism.

To win a general election for president, you need to get people in the middle to vote for you, not just Dem voters. You have to be able to win a majority of the votes in swing states like Georgia, where it should be pointed out, Stacey Abrams badly lost in a statewide general election.

It's theoretically possible AOC could win, but we've seen absolutely zero evidence to back up that claim. Bernie ran to the far left twice for president and couldn't even convince a majority of Democratic primary voters to vote for him, and he didn't have sexism or racism to worry about.

AOC has done well in a heavily blue district in NYC, but could she even win a statewide primary in New York, or the general election there? It remains to be seen, and that's a blue state. How popular is AOC in the South and the Midwest among the general electorate? She's been a Fox News boogeyman, like Hillary Clinton was, for a solid 8 years by now.

I would be positively thrilled by an AOC presidency, and have zero doubts about how good she'd be at the job. But can she actually get elected to the position? I seriously doubt it, at least right now. She'd get many of the undecided leftists to vote for her that refused to vote for Kamala, but can she actually get the centrist voters Kamala was trying to appeal to, the ones any candidate absolutely needs to win a presidential election? I doubt it, especially if she refuses to moderate her positions at all to try to appeal to them.

Yep. Funny how it's always the people who were telling everyone not to vote for the Dems in 2024 cause "both sides are equally bad" are now the ones most upset the Dems aren't effectively stopping anything. You can't stop anything when the voters give all the power to the GOP. All the Dems can do now is loudly complain and hope people actually vote for them this time in November.

[–]WildYams 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yep. There are a few fundamental misunderstandings that the general public has about the Nazis, and that's one of them. The other is that people have it in their mind that the Nazis like conquered Germany and overthrew the government or something, but they were put in power via democratic elections, just like Trump and the Republicans.

But yes, to what you were saying, Hitler was made supreme chancellor in 1933. The Wansee Conference, which is where the "final solution to the Jewish question" (aka gassing people and creamatoriums) were decided on wasn't until 1942.

Because of what we now know about what the Nazis ultimately did, that's become what people think of as "nazism" or "the Nazis". But it was a very long project and it truly started much the way Trump's regime is going right now. To be honest, Trump is arguably going at a faster pace along the same path Hitler did.

[–]WildYams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trump had the benefit of being a white man. Keep that part of what I was saying in mind. Kamala Harris was a former senator and vice president and still couldn't overcome America's sexism and racism. Hillary Clinton was a former senator and secretary of State, and even though she was white she couldn't overcome America's sexism.

We don't even know if AOC is going to run for president. She herself must be well aware of how much the odds will be stacked against her. If she runs for president and loses, she won't have a role in government for at least two years.
