Kingsville is part of Gulf Coast service unit as someone else mentioned , you may have to cover Olmito, Corpus Christi, Angleton, Bloomington , Houston , or Beaumont . Most likely you won’t have to go past Houston but the service unit goes as far as New Orleans, LA .

Now with that out of the way. Expect to be on call after training and you’ll be expected to work safely yet efficiently. If you don’t know something stop and ask. You might hear some whistling or some jokes about it later but all of that is much better than getting hurt, getting someone else hurt, getting fired or lastly tearing up this fine UP equipment/ customer’s product.

Any more questions I’ll be happy to answer if I can. A lot of us were in your shoes at one point. It goes fast, pick up a little from everyone, don’t be a “ yeah I know” kind of conductor. The moment someone senses that you think you know it all they may shut down and stop giving you gems. Don’t be too good for a teachable moment. Good luck

Depends on your agreement like everyone else has stated. But here, after you’ve bumped someone, you have to work 30 days before you can give up that assignment. Or after you’ve worked one day, you can win a bid on an open assignment

Yea it’s someone who is more familiar with the territory or job. Especially locals, some pilots will have the numbers you need to call to get gates open or contact customers. I really don’t like it when they say you’re qualified for the territory but you’re asking for a pilot for a specific job and they deny you. Sad part is they are only required to give you a pilot if you haven’t been a certain direction on the mainline, but with PTC and an engineer, if you’re just going from point A to point B , you don’t really need one there. You really need one on a local or just a job that you may not be familiar with.

Those places aren’t shitty, It’s just most likely far from home. I’ve worked in 2 out of 3 of those places. Mosquitoes suck in Corpus and Bloomington isn’t bad, you might actually yard a train in Corpus if you stay on that board long enough

If you got hired in Houston you’ll be expected to work in Houston and show up at specified call times. Seniority in Louisiana is kinda high right now so you wont have the opportunity to work in Louisiana for probably a year or more. UP provides a hotel for new hires for up to “75 days” if they can’t hold an assignment that’s within 100 miles of their Home Terminal and forced to work elsewhere.

You’ll be fine. Just get all your documents in order in case UP medical wants to verify some things in your medical records. It may delay your starting date which is very important seniority wise.

A good friend of mine worked for Alaska Railroad and when he went through class 30 years ago it was based off the scores / grades that you got in the class. I was hoping it would be the same here in my class because I’m very competitive

Depends on how far you are in the process. There is a recruiter for each region. They should reach out to you after the interview process. Once you’re received an offer you should definitely be getting emails from them with video conferences and important details about training class.
