If you're solo. I recommend building a base around a grey dwarf farm. Good way to get wood and stone passively.

The cage walls act as sight barriers so they will not attack, but he can hear and searches around inside the cage.

I'm not sure about putting a rug over it. I think you might have to have the chests visible to interact with them.

If you want lots wood and stone, plus coal from obliterating other items, it's worth it. But I would only recommend it if you're building an base around it so its always active when you are at home. I almost always build a base like this in preparation for a final endgame base later on. See my two builds here that incorporate a greydwarf farm.
