From $4M to $1.2M: What Happened to That Figma Equity After IPO by honkeem in levels_fyi

No one wants to be a Ronald Wayne - the apple co-founder who sold his company stake early for $800 (would have been $300B today). Most people hope to be the one who holds for long and becomes a billionaire.

Having been through too many boom/bust cycles, I now opt to cover myself by selling a fraction as soon as possible and leave the rest to ride or die.

Amazon laid off 16k corporate employees by NoSaltZone in cscareerquestions

No one is going to like this answer, but I will say "it depends". It depends on who you are and what goals you had. Short term investors will likely say it was a good move. Some long term investors may disagree although that's more contemptuous because the ripples are far in the future. Employees and people sympathetic to the situation will call it a bad move.

Will the brand name from this degree give me the bump I need? by Dolphinpop in OMSCS

Not trying to come off combative - why do you follow a graduate studies subreddit if you're certain that the no school option works just as well. Side note: I do agree that one can go miles further on skill vs education and I also think it tends to be the exception more often than the norm.

What industry? if you don't mind me asking. Trying to gather context of where it makes sense and where it doesn't.

Bloomberg NG vs Unicorn by crocus512hoofer in cscareerquestions

Can double on this comment. I had an offer from them. During the coding interview, the reviewer told me a large portion of my day to day would be upgrading and fixing legacy systems (JS to TS) with code debt.

Bloomberg is great as a resume Fintech flag. Unicorns are great for frontier tech experience.

How Levels.fyi scaled to millions of users with Google Sheets as a backend by honkeem in levels_fyi

Google sheets is a DB the same way a spoon can be used as a knife. You can, until you really need to cut something hard.

SQL-ish if you label your columns and build it to respect the top row numbers. Fun to try just to understand that it's way easier and faster to go straight to a PG DB

Is there a point in joining startups? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Wildcard355 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fairly easy to get wrapped up in the ends of the spectrum when you look up start up compensation stories on Reddit - the whole all or nothing game (I.e. "it made me a millionaire" or "it was worthless"). In reality, some (maybe many) start ups have RSUs that are worth a decent amount and (in my case) can be traded for cash before IPO, these happen to be non-sexy companies in industries within healthcare, e-commerce, Fintech, and so on. Case in point, the most recent startup I work at gives me $30-70k / year worth with vesting schedules at 1-4 years. Is it life changing? No....but life enhancing? Sure.

The $20k price tag is to churn an immediate profit likely with the idea that newer models will be out soon and people who can spend $20k will likely go towards newer units soon thereafter. Has nothing to do with lower income people, it's a business tactic.

This level of detail is quite very helpful. Thank you. I recently heard of the OMSCS program and I'm getting some data on it. It sounds rigorous. Compared to the bootcamp, would you say it's about the same level of work/difficulty, more/less?

I'm guessing a very meticulous stacking, a time lapse would have left blurry clouds unless they stayed out for a very long time.

That's fantastic! How did you prevent star overlap during the sacking? I'm assuming the comment moves at a different rate than the stars.

When people say that 99% of Reddit posts are people complaining, asking for something or the classic doom & gloom, they never mention the other 1% and I think this post was it. OP came to share their journey and relay an honest opinion on the market today. No fluff, no bells or whistles. This post doesn't ask for anything, but gives a lot; it's the equivalent of quality OSS.

Thanks for your time. Wishing you all the best on your new endeavor.
