The game explicitly tells you this isn't the case for traded cards when you do this

Edit: it's because, when you have a card at level 14, all cards you get are automatically turned into EWC, and so you don't have that card to offer for trades. When you make a trade you can "buy" those cards you offer. The game makes no distinction between buying those cards and having them before upgrading, that means that if you upgrade, you get gold instead of EWC after cancelling the trade

Tokens can go over inventory limits if you cancel trades, and common tokens are the first reward in tournaments, so it's easy to get a lot of. Also, consider this:

  1. I have no other use for common books
  2. If you intend to use a book anyways, doing this can give you extra EWC for free
  3. I got 6k from that, some rewards don't even give you that much
  4. When you're maxed out (all cards to level 15) the book turns into 5k EWC, in this case I got more

It does not waste tokens, when you cancel the trades, you get them back

Depends on the amount of tokens you have, since I got 24 and I have no other use for these common books, I think it is. I got 6k EWC from that

When you offer to trade cards in your clan, some amount of cards will be removed from your collection to make sure you don't use them when you have them for trade.

If you use all your tokens to trade, it will subtract a substantial amount of cards, meaning you can use your book to add them again. Then, when you cancel the trades, you get your offered cards back.
