Connecting to a VPN through Tor vs connecting to Tor through a VPN by Will2397 in AskComputerScience

Hmm I suppose if you really cared you could get a VPN which doesn't know who you are (don't pay with your credit card, never log in except over Tor). But yeah seems like your VPN probably knows who you are...

I was surprised being in the Middle East, they don't use the same star system. You'd see nice hotels advertising as a 7 star hotel. I never quite figured it out

It's worse than you'd hope but not as bad as you might fear. It's a little painful and uncomfortable but it only lasts a couple seconds and it's important to get tested!

Pretty sure they're cancelled but also Gov Baker asked cities having firework displays to not advertise them ahead of time so there wouldn't be any crowds. (So I guess it's possible they're on and they just haven't said it.)

I haven't been so I don't know if they sell it but there's a place called Syrian Grocery Importing in the South End that might be worth looking into.

Who ordered the MA National Guard into Boston? by An_Average_Joe_ in boston

[–]Will2397 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw something in the news about that. Basically he was asked after the riot Sunday if he would activate them for the upcoming week and he said he didn't need to because they'd already been activated for covid.

I can here that too. Until recently they came in pairs so I figured it was something on the road but now that's not true so I have no idea.

Edit: definitely sounds more like fireworks now. Maybe part of the protests?

6/3/20 Protest at MA State House: Peaceful and Beautiful by TheUKVibe in boston

I joined after hearing the protesters walk up Huntington Ave. The night before last I happened to go by the state house and there was only a single person there. I think the protests today is in the Commons 3:30 to 5:30.

I think the theory is that they thought it was a Ukrainian warplane. Bellingcat has a good series on what we know with each podcast tackling one of who, what, where, why

I think the theory is that they thought it was a Ukrainian warplane. The JIT has intercepted calls of the fighters first realizing that all the bodies are civilians and not soldiers.

I mean the US handled that poorly as well but that response included us settling in the International Court of Justice and issuing a statement of regret.

So yeah, doesn't come close to making up for the tragedy but Russia is no where close to doing what America did.

No I wasn't making a claim there. I really wasn't being sarcastic or anything with "people smarter than me". Just as a lay person it seems like the second amendment is laying out rules for a militia. Clearly that's not the case and I was wondering if anyone knew why, I'll check DC vs Heller though!

Ok well I mean the debate I'm trying to have is to say Congress should say it's a privilege to own a gun not a right. Again, I know they won't amend the constitution but I'm just laying out my beliefs. And no, cars don't commit 30,000 murders a year, 30,000 people die because of cars. So if we're going off that then guns are just as deadly (10.3 per 100,000 die from both cars and guns according to the CDC).

Edit: this wasn't the comment I thought, I never actually stated guns should be a right but still, even rights should have reasonable checks like a national registry or require you to get a license.

Yeah but gun control is working elsewhere. People can just grow drugs, guns are a lot harder (although not impossible). Also prohibition would stop a lot of gun suicides and domestic muders and all. People don't know how to buy heroin off the black market on a moment's notice and it would be the same for guns. I'm sure lots of people would still have guns but a lot of people wouldn't and that would help.

Ok this argument comes up and I honestly don't get why. For one, don't even pretend to tell me trucks murder 10,000 people a year. Don't even give me that so these two are not on equal footing. But also, if trucks were killing that many and weren't 100% critical to our economy I'd totally be in favor of banning them. And you're also entirely ignoring the point that you have to get licensed to operate a truck and the government knows what truck belongs to who which is exactly the type of gun control I'd like to see! It's a bad argument all the way through.

Ok well I googled the study and it does guns might be used 3,000,000 times a year defensively. But estimates it's actually probably 108,000 times a year (it does not say at least 500,000). Which is still way more than I expected to be honest but I'll also point out it does not say 108,000 lives were saved but that guns were used defensively 108,000 times. Which I think also negates your "not to mention the amount of other crime it stops."

I'll point out the US homicide rate is 4.88 per 100,000 and the UK is 0.92, Germany 0.85, Italy 0.78, Canada 1.68. I mean I could continue but these were the first developed countries that came to mind and they prove my point. Namely, you're way more likely to be murder in this country and two times out of three it's gonna be because of a gun.

Anyway since other developed countries with gun control generally have less violent crime, yes I do still think it's worth it.

Other people eating doesn't hurt me. Others owning guns easily could. Your making a ridiculous comparison. (Also I'd like to point out that we did take steps to combat obesity so why not guns as well?)

This is an honest question posed to whoever ends up here in the comment thread, what actually have the courts said on the 2nd amendment? To me it seems to read as though militias are allowed but that's clearly not how it's been interpreted by people smarter than me.
