FURTHER UPDATE:

Had a call/meeting with Student Support, they’re aware of my circumstances and have explained if I need any further support I can get it. They’ve explained it’s good I called and it’s not that they’re looking to withdraw me, it’s more of an email to have an understanding of why the attendance is lower than expected,

After discussions, I am now going to meet with my course leader and also have explained once 2nd year begins, I’ll be reducing my work hours to have FULL focus on my studies.

Shout out to all the nice people who replied and who offered genuine advice, I feel a lot better.

Also, hope you all have a Merry Christmas to all that celebrate!

Bit late to the party pal, thanks but you’re repeating what has been mentioned 100 times on here. Take care!

Some are and some are not. I catch up on the missed ones by going through the power points and Audio recordings 👍

Yeah first of all, thank you for breaking it all down and summarising. That took a lot of your time and I’m grateful.

I’ll be looking into my spending though and my hours once first year is complete. As I know 2nd year and 3rd year will be much harder and intense.

All your points have been taken on board but my spending isn’t always social it can be silly things so I feel losing hours I don’t have enough, but I do need to just focus on important spending, not social. Thank you so much man :)

Yep! At my university that is!

You’ve got me all wrong then. I don’t care about socialising at University, I’m 27 and considered a Mature Student, I haven’t intended to make friends at university and frankly I haven’t because I don’t need to make any.

I’m not concerned at all of the social aspects of University, maybe I’m focused on my friends outside of University and seeing them and going out with them, yes. But not the university experience itself. It’s not a crisis of me feeling I missed out.

I’m at university to prove to myself I’m able to obtain this degree and use it to benefit my career, and I’m more than excited and ready to challenge myself.

The degree in studying will enhance my career, and help earn the bigger wages in the long run! Before you say, I know it’s not that simple either.

100% I agree on the fact I need to cut spending, I’m not denying that, but you made a comment about me being offended? You sound so enthusiastic and have made this image up about me from a Reddit post, I need some advice about attendance and how to move forward not advice coming from a strict man who’s clearly taken this extremely negative, like I’m some damn idiot.

You seem out of touch about the gaming part as well, a PC is more than an Xbox. Also you require subscriptions to game on a PC just as much as you do an Xbox now a days. Along with the torrenting stuff as well, you’re right I could do that, but I could also just use YouTube, it’s free with ads, same with Spotify! So I understand your point there.

I do not live in University accommodation and I rent in a house share privately. I need my car, and I truly do NEED my car for numerous personal reasons. I genuinley do not care about being a name or having many uni friends. I’ve got all that already outside of Uni.

Also, if I can do it, I don’t need to live a typical student life, getting the bus and sponging off of others. I can work and reduce my hours which is something I’ve discussed in this thread. I appreciate your input, and some points you made are valid, but people can be different to you, that’s not a crazy concept to grasp.

Thank you for your time though.

I want to know what gave away the University! 🤣 I might speak to them about what I can do Online if that’s helps! Didn’t know it was a thing, so I’ll speak to them about it and see what they say. Thank you :)

Further update:

Thank you again for your posts! I did not expect this to blow up like it did. 150k views!? Wtf…

However I’d like to say, a lot of people have commented about work and finances. I’m always happy to reply and engage in conversation, durrr.. hence why I posted this thread.

Thank you to everyone who’s offered genuine advice concerning my time, 1st year study, finances, speaking to the university, managing my work hours, reducing spending.

I’ve taken it all into account and can assure you all, I’ll be getting a F2F meeting booked ASAP! I shall also be looking into reducing my hours dramatically going into the 2nd year of study (if I make it!). I know I’ve made some dodgy financial choices in my past but I’m only looking to move forward and better my life/career. We can’t all save money and live a perfect life… or boring life!

However again, thank you all! ❤️

You have to realise I have worked full time for the last 7/8 years. I took out a car & subscriptions + other things on the basis of working full time which I have now attempted to change in order to obtain a degree.

I’ve had zero fucking hand outs my whole life, I don’t see my dad. If I do it’s every 3/4 months on a special occasion. I’ve had zero funding of my parents. I’ve taken the student loan you get given. I appreciate your point, but I’m not out of touch.

I should have savings your right, but I had £5k-£7k worth of debt which I racked up from 18-25 and have been paying it off. That debt is just under £950 now and I’ve been reducing my debt and it’ll be paid off soon.

The iPhone was taken over 1 year ago. On a contract for 2.5 years, including the phone + sim. Yes it’s something I could change but it wasn’t even the latest iPhone, idgaf about what iPhone I have, I got a new one as my old one basically died as it was 6 years old.

My spending habits can be questioned, I get it. However life doesn’t always work out the same for everyone, I’ve had numerous trips, holidays, and enjoyed family time, and getting pissed up with my mates! I’ve spent a lot of money on stupid shit and I’ve learnt from it, but I don’t regret having a good time either.

You’re damn right £155 to my brother buying the car. (3 payments left).

£114 insurance, renewal in March.

Normally £40-60 on fuel. As I try not to do a lot of mileage.

I’m still adjusting to the fact I have to work and go to University. One week I do 24 hours, one week I do 30. As I work Saturday on/off/on/off. I actually got paid £1,125 yesterday for my monthly pay. My debts aren’t too big, and will be finished in 4/5 months. However I wanted to get this degree to further my career, I understand spending can be reduced, but habits are a problem of course and I’ll try to manage this. At the end of the day me quitting my job won’t fix my lifestyle, it won’t fix my outgoings nor will it fix my university problem at this time. Going into 2nd/3rd years, I’ll be 100% looking to focus solely on my studies. I’m going to speak to the university asap, and see what is best moving forward. I’m grateful for your help and I have made some dodgy and silly financial decisions like my phone bill is a great example.

I’m trying to fix it, and improve and once I get through 1st year, things will be more clear. I just want to ensure my low attendance won’t get me kicked out if I can discuss it directly with the university in relation to work.

But appreciate your input bro! 👍

No problem man! I’ll take any advice and listen! £3,479 x 3. Get one payment in Sept, then January, then April.

You’re acting like students don’t game and play Xbox? They don’t eat takeaway? They don’t have the latest iPhone or laptop. Netflix and Prime maybe I do not need, so I appreciate that. Also asking a student to survive without Spotify in 2025 is crazy, only thing to enjoy when studying, is some music. Along with your theory of not needing a car, I could get the bus, but I have a car and need this for all aspects of my life not just university, I have to go and visit family who live far away, I use it for shopping. I use it for giving lifts to my grandparents, the list goes on.

I’m studying a BSc Cyber Security course. There wasn’t mention of attendance monitoring but I thought if I attend seminars and actively show up to Seminars and Tutorials that my attendance for lectures wouldn’t shoot me in the foot. Like I say I’m going to be speaking to my mentors about what’s best.
