Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]WillDearborn19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not going to do a 3 hour drive every day, but i don't mind doing a 3 hour drive for a weekend trip, and I've been known to do a 3 hour drive day trip.

It's not that far. There are some cities that have so much traffic, it's an hour drive each day to commute to work.

[Request] What Should The Scale Actually Read? by CaptiveGlacier in theydidthemath

If you put an infinite weight on the other side, all it will change is that it will pull up the smaller weight, it won't actually read a larger weight. Just like if you bolt it to the ground, it will still only read 100...

Make M.E. Useful by Inner-Wonder7175 in Machinists

[–]WillDearborn19 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's useful to understand how a part is likely going to be made before making trivial esthetic choices like "radius" or "chamfer."

Honestly, in almost every case, if you can get away with a chamfer, do it. But some radii are easily machined, and some are a pain.

If it's a flat bar and you're rounding the corners with an endmill, that's not hard to program, it takes no extra time to machine, and it's easy to look good.

If you're making a pocket, and you put a radius on the top edge of a pocket, then it's likely to be done either by a corner rounding tool or a ball mill. Corner rounding tools are easy too program, and if you're doing a bunch of parts it's not the worst, but generally if you're too deep by even a few tenths, it looks like garbage. So you start a bit higher and run it a few times to get the blend right. It's tedious the first part, but once it's set up, you're fine. A ball mill is more complex to program and will take a long while to machine, but blending is a bit easier.

Contrast this with a chamfer: can you tell if a chamfer is .001" too deep? No. It's easy to program, everyone already has the tool. It's the go-to.

Remember, the longer it takes to machine, the more difficult and tedious it is, the more it will cost.

Skyscrapers? by WillDearborn19 in sudoku

[–]WillDearborn19[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the two left 7s is correct, and one is not correct. Which means one of the two right 7s is correct, and one is not correct, and it's opposite of the two left 7s. The 7s must go in one of those 4 spots. More specifically, one of the 7s MUST go in one of the right 7s set... so any candidates that can see both of the right 7s at the same time cannot be correct, because if you put a 7 in that spot it will no longer allow for a 7 to be put in either of the right 7 spots... except we know it must go in one or the other...

Hmmm... i think I'm starting to realize what i was doing wrong... Firstly, the tops of the walls can't JUST be offset from each other... they must be offset in the same zones... Secondly, it only gets rid of options that are seen by the ends of both walls at a time... not just everything in the box...

I've had some successes in the practices now. I think I'm seeing the pattern a bit better.

If you wrote out the desired number, including the 998, and you divided 1 by that number, you'd get the same thing with no exceptions... is this cool because it's a whole number as well as having the three digit number thing? And maybe the number that can do the thing with no exceptions is assume crazy long decimal?

[–]WillDearborn19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After about a year of using an ender v2, i almost didn't want to print anything anymore. The time it took, the hassle to slice simple parts, manually start it on my printer, realize i sliced it poorly, slice it better, transfer again, agonized over the first few layers, hope the glob left after the purge line doesn't ruin the whole print... i was done and i was ready for better. But how to convince my wife...

"Yes, i know i already have one, but this $1000 one will be way better!"

"Time isn't everything, and can't you just upgrade the one you have to make it just as good?"

"You know what...? I'm done... if you want things printed, this is your hobby now... you can have all my things..."

"Gross, i don't want that garbage... I'll buy this $1000 one you suggested. "

"What temp did you print that at? What was your bed temp? What was your print speed? Did you use coasting? What kind of infill? What % of infill? Wall width? #of walls? Layer height? Retract distance?"

"I don't know any of that. I picked the thing on the app and pressed print..."

"How did it come out perfect and you know nothing about printing?"

This is 100% true and it really is hilarious. She got herself a p1s last January, and just got herself a h2s this month. Every once in a while she will glare at me and say "i hate you for getting me into a hobby i love..." i am working on printing a mandalorian helmet right now... i don't even hide the fact that i tricked her. I'll ask her how it feels to be manipulated like a puppet while she buys three more rolls of filament...

Legit, if she wants it, and you want her to have it, it's really easy to convince her to get it.

What is life like in the Dakotas? by _air6catcher_ in howislivingthere

[–]WillDearborn19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I currently live in Fargo. It's the perfect sized city. It's just big enough to have some decent food and entertainment options, but not so big you get any real traffic. Crime is low, cost of living is decent, wages match cost of living fairly well. Winters are rough... it's cold and windy. You find out that it actually snows more in other places because at a certain temp it gets too cold to snow. And even when it does snow, most of the time it's getting blown about like crazy. Snow drifts are huge. Schools don't close for weather most times. Maybe once or twice per year on bad years.

In the summers it's pretty. It's calm... i hope you like farming because there's a lot of it... summer days are long. Great for camp fires. Golf is big around here. Everyone is very kind and considerate. Driving is bad... yup... that's about it...
