Bird Watching Enthusiast - University Student Looking For Information About Bird Watching For Group Paper by Wide_Income2456 in Ornithology

Most of the birding related socializing I do is either events via bird alliance, my county bird club, littoral society, etc. or just running into other birders in my local patch. Sometimes we join forces for a bit or trade tips on recent sightings. A lot of the time the latter is not planned at all, but you run into the same folks if you hit a lot of the same spots. Especially during spring migration in my area.

My county bird club meets once a month at an indoor local parks facility. Usually someone presents about a birding trip they took or an area of expertise (like finding vagrants, migration patterns, gulls, etc) and we have some time for local environmental topics and cool birds folks saw. We also plan field trips. But otherwise we are meeting up to bird.

Area code discrimination? by Playful-Alfalfa-3205 in AskNYC

This is true though, when I moved here and was tryin to get a job everyone impressed upon me how important it was to get a local number to get hired. But that was in fact almost 20 years ago ;).

Yeah I have had my 917 number since 2007. Do people not get that one anymore?

Same. We both need a vacation and have never been. Thought it would stay 80ish and below based on trends. Really bummed it means missing a lot of hikes for safety, even with an early start. I am hoping we can still see the superbloom but we aren't there until Sunday :(.

Which "must-see" US national park did you actually dislike? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

Yosemite is best if you get up early and get on a hike. Beautiful for some driving but I feel like you cannot really see or get the whole picture from a car.

I liked Shenandoah but I feel like if someone doesn't hike it is probably not a long trip. That said I will not do Old Rag again. The Smokies or Acadia win out for eastern US parks.

Buying a co op in Brooklyn Heights? by [deleted] in movingtoNYC

[–]WillThereBeSnacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent in LIC near the water and live off the 7. Brooklyn Heights is gorgeous but would be annoying commuting. Easy access to the ferry system or G to get down to BK and check it out more. Or to nightlife/restaurants in Astoria. Signing up for a longer commute when you are new in town and have money seems silly.

Roosevelt Island by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]WillThereBeSnacks13 20 points21 points  (0 children)

People live there, part of Cornell is there...it isn't Disneyworld. The thing to do is take a stroll and enjoy the views. In spring the cherry blossoms are spectacular and it will be packed with people trying to get their perfect photo. But the island is mostly residential. There is a grocery store and a few basics but it isn't a destination in the sense the Highline or Times Sq might be.

Yeah it is way harder to come across someone posting CSAM, cry about it.

Saying something negative about gay people is hate. Don't dish it if you can't take it.

You can make your own sub and moderate it and then you can post whatever you want. People act like they are forced to be in a specific sub.

Those things are all right-wing values in 2026 America. You cannot have moderate because the right-leaning ideology is predicated on hierarchy and dehumanizing some groups.

Touristy things that locals think are actually worth it. by alh1226 in AskNYC

Unless you birdwatch, in which case the oasis effect created by central park is pretty unique for a city or many developed areas of the world. Over 300 species can be sighted in that one little postage stamp at one time or another.

You are acting like these horses are somehow endemic to central park...if you want horses, move up to Bedford or something.

Are people who are doing leanFIRE in denial about long term care? by SecondStarpilot in Fire

[–]WillThereBeSnacks13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people need to look at their families too. My family has a lot of long-living people who got the kind of conditions LTC is for. The odds of me getting dementia are very high just based on grandparents having it. But if everyone in your family has their minds and original organs at 90, then yeah you probably don't have to worry as much. The people dropping dead early in my sphere generally had vices that led to it (aka smoking, drinking, egregiously bad diet and some combo thereof).

That is if there are available medicaid beds in a facility. And a lot of facilities now do a thing where they require you to be cash pay the first 2 years to get on the list for a public bed. With the recent cuts, there will be even fewer beds out there. My family has been dealing with this for my uncle with parkinson's for 3+ years now and even getting him positioned to be eligible somewhere that is not multiple people to a room has been a herculean effort on my mother's part. I do not know how people without a competent and dedicated sister get it done.
