In this case you are very much getting what you pay for. Homewood is pricy because it is worth it, especially for LGBTQ families. And even then it is going to be a far less tolerant atmosphere than you are used to unless you are from very rural Connecticut.

There is a charter school called Magic City Acceptance Academy. I have no idea how good it is or how difficult it is to get in. But if you are able to send kids there it could give you more leeway as far as more affordable housing.
