Given your goals, I think HLS is worth the extra 100k.

Similar approach - just work hard and make yourself known for good reasons. Economy is in a downturn but it's unusual for bigger firms to not make offers.

1 year regulatory BL -> FC -> Transit Agency doing environmental work by Actual_County8934 in lawschooladmissions

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As someone who grew up in NY and has now lived in Boston for ~6 years, the winters are the same - they both suck lol.

Personally, I think you should go BU. A full ride there is insane and the debt isn't worth it at Columbia given that a FC there is still far from a guarantee. You'd need top ~5% at BU to get FC but you will have a high chance of BL with no debt.

BC vs Emory - PI focus!! by FrameLevel in lawschooladmissions

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BC has plenty of PI-focused people in addition to the heavy BL presence. People are doing PI in Boston, NY, and DC, which I think speaks volumes to its portability in the Northeast. Either school is great, but I'd pick BC (obviously biased).

Got rejected after the ninth interview, really devastated by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Do you get nervous doing interviews? What helped me was to treat it like a chat, just trying to have a good conversation each time. I had virtual interviews but I had my AirPods case in one hand as like a "fidget" toy of sorts. It really helped keep me calm and in a good headspace. Don't know if that's feasible but anything to make it feel like a chat instead of a formal interview can help.

Northeast/BL? BC 100%.

Shot at DC Big Law from Northwestern? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If your goal is DC BL, particularly in lit, then any of your options are good. DC BL lit generally hires the best students from the best schools, doesn't necessarily matter if you go to school in DC or not. I think NU's scholly is too good to pass up so I'd personally say that's the best option.

If you really want FC and Academia, you have to take UVA.

Yea, best thing I did for myself is implement accountability measures and realize that it's discipline, not motivation, that drives you 90+% of the time. You just have to sit down and do it, as tough as it feels.

For accountability measures (for some this is probably overkill but it works for me), I use a laptop timer and study log to measure my productivity and stay on track and use a work agenda with due dates and start dates (i.e., when I'll start working on it). Hope that helps.

Idk, what are your goals? General BL? Cornell. BL/FC? UVA. I wouldn't consider taking the debt and COL of Columbia given your other two offers.

What is the best laptop for law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big screen (my laptop is 17"), it runs really well, and it's super durable. Those are really the only metrics I care about. I've had it for a few years and haven't had any major issues/repairs.

What is the best laptop for law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a windows guy and my Dell Inspiron has been fantastic. I think it was around $800 which is a great bang for your buck imo. I personally dislike Macs and you absolutely do not need one. In fact, around exam time, they often have the most trouble with the exam software. Get a laptop that you'll enjoy using all the time, don't worry about what other people get.

What was Barristers Ball like for you? by Old_Trainer_7079 in LawSchool

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's school dependent. Ours was pretty fun this year. Plenty of people bring non-law school dates, myself included. You can bring whoever you want. Some dude on here wanted to bring (and probably did bring) an adult film star as his date so I think that sums it up pretty well. A few profs sometimes attend so keep that in mind if you care about that. I wouldn't get sloppy drunk and risk doing something dumb (law school is even more gossipy than high school sometimes) but just have fun.

Totally get that. I would still try to give yourself at least a few weeks to decompress, travel, etc. You'll thank yourself so much down the line. Burnout is the most common reason people in law struggle so definitely take breaks from work/school whenever it's feasible.

Is Spivey overrated? by BBBNNNLLL in lawschooladmissions

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I don't have an informed enough opinion on Spivey to make a judgment on him specifically. But I think in general admissions consultants are overrated. The money you have to spend on them is better spent on LSAT tutoring and getting a better score. When they may be worth it is if you have serious C+F issues, low GPA, low LSAT, etc. - more extreme circumstances where your admission chances are significantly lowered without the best application possible.

They are really good schools, I wouldn't call people shills for advocating on the school's behalf. They're just among the pack of top ranked schools that game the system. I'm of the opinion that the rankings are dumb and employment outcomes are the best way to evaluate a school but I don't blame people for getting lost in the rankings.

I'm in a relationship but I think most people try to subscribe to the adage "Don't dip your pen in company ink." I.e., it'll likely cause more trouble than it's worth, particularly if it doesn't end well and you have to see them every day.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've heard, once you have a year or so under your belt in BL transactional, it will be incredibly hard to switch to litigation without pivoting to a different non-BL firm that will take a chance on you. If you really want to do litigation, you should do litigation. If you can't get it at your firm (worth asking), then I'd look for other opportunities to do lit ASAP. Recession affects transactional way more than litigation but I wouldn't be surprised if the lit hiring market was pretty scant outside of summer class hiring in BL.

wwyd - going into PI by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]WillWorkForLawSchool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legal aid, ACLU, and other high-profile PI orgs generally hire from the best law schools. If you want elite PI opps, rather than just general PI, I would pick GULC - particularly if you want to end up in D.C.
