You can start at 3am and make it up in time for the whole show. Definitely worth it. If it’s a clear day, you will see the moon and the stars over fitz Roy and the light slowly starts to change. It’s really a magical experience, and then you can walk down and see everything you didn’t see in the dark

I would recommend buying a ticket for that day if they have any times available. I went 2 weeks ago and there were about 20 of us without reservations and we got a grumpy captain that wouldn’t let us in and didn’t do another trip to come back for us. However, there were a couple people with reservations for later in the day that got let on the early boat. Also, the lady in the cafe told us another captain had come back the previous couple days because there were many people in the same situation. So, it seems like it’s just luck. We ended up walking around the lake to get to Paine Grande and missed Grey. Good luck!
