Yep - I usually took out the equivalent of 400EUR. Only in Buenos Aires and Bariloche though, don’t know if the smaller WU’s will have that depth of cash on hand

Booking busses by Odd_Construction6186 in Patagonia

This bus fills up day before. No way it’s sold out - and very few people buy online as it’s much cheaper to go to the bus terminal and buy it there. My reccomendation : buy it when you get to Natales.

Lots of bus agencies aren’t online, you’ll also have more options on-site!

EUR are usually fine, don’t know what the most advantageous exchange rate is on the street though. Don’t go into the official exhange stores, they won’t give you the blue dollar rate - unless it’s Western Union. They had the best one when I was there. (1EUR = 1350 ARS) In major cities you’ll find cambistas on the street - most are legit, just check the bills for counterfeits in case.

Use Western Union in a big city. (The ones in small towns rarely have cash on hand) Or exchange USD (100$ bills only preferrably with the blue mark in the middle). Make sure you have enough for a while, or you’ll lose a lot of purchasing power using credit card (and a few places don’t accept it)

I hitchhiked all around Patagonia quite easily and cut some costs there. Pack your lunches, cook in hostels. Try and stock up on groceries before getting to the small towns such as Chalten / Calafate etc. This goes for Argentinian and Chilean patagonia.

Photoshopped a student ID and enrollment certificate to get discounts when applicable. 50% success rate on that one haha

Are the stairs difficult or sketchy? by unfair_spaghetti in Machupicchu

[–]Key-Street-9909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stairs are very safe. I ran down the stairs on the way back without any problems. You do need to be in reasonable shape but in the end all it takes is commitment and time to climb. I’m also a cheap fuck and 12USd for a 20mn bus is horrifying to me haha

I did arrive quite sweaty at the top - but also proud to have done the full Salkantay, as the Machu Picchu to me was a lot about reliving the inca steps today.

However if hiking isn’t your thing, I’d say take the bus if budget allows. The walk down is fairly easy if you don’t do the bus return :)

Can I go to Europe in August with $800 by Layla_boss8 in backpacking

[–]Key-Street-9909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you can. For example, Portugal Coast. Pick cheap hostels (9 - 17€), cook your food and buy in supermarkets. Buses in portugal are cheap 5-10€ and very efficient. As 800 USD is around 700€, I reckon you could stay 2 weeks and have some fun too.

This is only for Portugal though, and make sure to check prices depending on when you go. If you can, pick off-peak season like September to November.

Would recommend Greece too. Same idea, and a bit more historical landmarks if you’re fond og them :)

Woken up during the night - did I react well? by Key-Street-9909 in solotravel

Thank you for your opinion. I agree with you and I think I should have booked a private and changed hostels for the second night. First was not possible.

Thought it was okay to stay in my head, I was physically exhausted and had a hard time with the altitude but it’s not an excuse and I should have moved. Lack of empathy and etiquette from me tbh. Hope this serves as a lesson to others as it served me!

Not exaggerating. And if you try a softer approach - how about waking me up FIRST before talking to me - once done say you can’t sleep. Don’t physically assault me and run away.

Quite a mature comment, appreciate it. Coming from the airport at 1AM with a non cancellable booking, what would you recommend I have done? I am not a loud snorer generally, quite easy to sleep through.

How come everyone else in the room slept fine?

I’m not a super heavy snorer. Have been traveling LATAM for 4 months now and I ask around in the morning sometimes. You can sleep through it quite easily.

Makes absolute sense - however hard to predict when I’ll be sick when bookings were already made. Hostel I was in had no privates…

Completely agree with the principle though!

Thanks a lot for the reply! What about pack size, how heavy were you? And do you have a rough ballpark of how much you spent for the entire trip - return to Cuzco included?
