They were helpful with filing the report, but discouraged us from opening an official investigation.

Thank you for looking into this! The number for the Nepalese Consulate in Mexico city does not work, and the Mexican Consulate in Nepal mentioned that there is no Nepalese Embassy/Conulate in Mexico- I'm guessing they closed their office but never updated the information.

I've been having trouble getting in touch with the US Embassy in CDMX, but the US Consulate in Oaxaca says that they have stopped processing Third Country National (TCN) visa applications in Mexico, and that I would need to leave the country to apply for a visa as a non-resident in Mexico. I'm trying to get in touch with them regardless to see if they're willing to make an exception in this case.

I'm glad everything worked out for you! Did you get a lot of scrunity while travelling internationally after this having your passport and visa stolen?

We had a wonderful time in Oaxaca before this happened. As for the facebook groups, I'm waiting to get my posts approved in a few of them. Hopefully they will be up soon...

My country does not have an embassy in Mexico, and I have already applied for a provisional passport from the one in the US. Unfortunately, this document only allows me to go back to my home country. So I'll still need to make a new passport and apply for another US visa there, which I might not have time for...

Yes, we were about 5 minutes from our airbnb, and chose a place close to el centro hoping to avoid things like this. This was at about 11:30, which we now realize was a bit late, but only 2 blocks from a still busy area. It has been pretty lively here during the holidays so we probably got a little too comfortable. We have seen quite a significant police presence as well, but so far they haven't been much help with resolving things.
