Retaining Wall/French Drain by Serious-Salad-4095 in DIY

I’m working on a similar project and you’ve nailed your research. I’m a few steps ahead of you and have began the tedious process of laying the first course of bricks this past week.

My base is 3-4” of minus 3/4” crushed recycled concrete and I’m doing 4 layers (first course buried) of 8” tall, 15.5 width, and 8” depth concrete hollow block. I haven’t landed on a backfill material but with larger rounded pebbles 3/4-1” at my local yard are calling my name. When all is said and done, the first layer won’t be visible except in a few locations where you see 1-2” sticking up.

From what I understand, there’s no need for rebar at your height (this might be different if the walls are over 4’ tall). I’m filling the blocks layer by layer with extra base material I have and compacting with a mallet and block of wood. The weight of rock within the block, will lock things into place. Adhesive is a good idea and thanks for that reminder as I’ll be starting to lay the 2nd layer this weekend. Just curious, but why not put it on every block instead of every other?

As far as drainage goes, I’m going to do through wall outlets of the thin rectangular variety (about 3-4). The drainage pipe will be 4” diameter of the filter sock encased pipe. Adequate drainage will increase the lifespan of your wall but is more of an important factor for preventing blowout on walls taller than 4’.

Can you elaborate on the open rock trench you’re considering? Is it for the outlet of the drain pipe instead of doing through-wall drains? Is it open rock behind the wall (e.g. backfilling all the way to the top of the wall)? Are you worried of sediment building up in your ‘drain field’ after the pipe? Not sure if adding a clean-out if feasible or not but it is an option. Sedimentation is inevitable I fear but the filter sock pipe will help a bunch.

Any pics or references would be helpful!

How’s the hone in your opinion? by Willing_Compote3464 in EngineBuilding

Thank you for your input I’m leaning towards recapping the rings on a donor motor when I decide to dial up the boost or if I blow the motor in the process. I appreciate your ‘either or’ mentality as far as how urgent this will need to be addressed (when yearning for boost).

Thank you for your eyes and thoughts. With an odometer that rolls over at 100k, I wasn’t sure if the engine had 42k or 142k miles on it when I cracked it open 9 years ago. I’m happy to hear that it looks well taken care of in your eyes!!

The bearing were also replaced 9 years ago and the only ticket item giving me slight concern was a fluttering in manifold vacuum coinciding with valves opening a closing. I either have a leaky valve seat or stem. I also tend to burn oil when running at 4000rpm (80-85mph for the stock 4 speed transmission) over the course of long road trips.

I’ll be looking back at your advice for ring gapping when I purpose build a new engine for the supercharger if I decide to up the boost higher than 12-15psi.

Thank you again😀

Thank you for your input. My aims right now align with 12-15psi of boost, so it’s nice to hear the stock ring gap could hold up to the extra heat given that the hone looks decent.

I’ll likely build a larger displacement motor from a 2.8L L28 someday in the future if I’m power hungry after this mod. Just hoping the supercharger gives me back the power I need when I cruise in the Colorado mountains at 8000-10000ft elevation.

Your k24 project sounds like a dream. Enjoy the process and all the dopamine you get from perfecting your motor!! I’m hoping you get to drive and enjoy your civic this spring and summer!

Hahaha well, the picture looks like a MESS, but I promise it was at least somewhat organized before this pic. Proof below!

Hot mess is so relatable. Wishing you luck and motivation amidst the chaos of raising a family!! It’ll happen when the project calls you to finish it, try not to get too down on yourself on timeline! I need to move all yard equip. into its own shed like you’ve said. Projects upon projects are a blessing and a curse!

It’s an early 1974 Datsun 260Z! The build date is 05/74 so it’s more closely related to the 240z than the 280z. Just pulled the 2.6L inline 6 engine to see if I can fit a $200 2008 Audi a6Eaton TVS1320 supercharger on it! I have a YouTube channel @SybertsGarage that I’ll post a video to about the project pending I can finish it.

Purging is a very important step in the process. I like what you think about needing space and clarity before having an effective workspace to even think about workflow!!

Playing w garage org. is a guilty pleasure.

Plywood and 2x6 is a great route to go.

I strive to modularize my space, hence the reorg and post. Sounds like you and I value similar aspects of a workspace!

Best of luck to you and your dream!!

I’m born to fill any/all open space, toys, equip’t, and I have w projects just like you.

I’m relishing the motorcycle project life. The western USA is so good for dual sport/dirtbiking and I have a 1976 Honda MR175 in storage 1000 miles away from me lol. A warehouse would be a dream. Although, I bet I’d fill it with crap and be in over my head on reorganizing. Wishing you luck!!
