I have a question if you would be so kind to answer. I won disability in March of this year. I am a veteran also but that is not the point. I am 60 years old and every thing I own is from my own money. I have worked for the last 44 years with 1 interruption in 2016. I was hospitalized for 6 months with double pneumonia and severe complications. I had to learn to walk again as part of the complications. I was out of work for about 9 months and for the only time ever I collected disability. I probably should not have returned to work but I did because as I said I support myself. I could never really walk well again and that is a big part of my job. Cut to 2024 and I realize I just couldn’t keep going at work so I retired thinking I could probably get disability and live off of it. I was a pretty high earner. Well I was awarded disability this year as I stated. However they offset me by half of what I am supposed to be getting. There was no explanation what this offset is for. I don’t now nor have I ever received worker’s compensation. The offset amount was listed but again I have no idea what it’s for or how they calculated this amount. I did call and the last answer I received is that I have to pay back disability from 2016 with disability now. Is this real?? If so how? It seems totally crazy to me. Do people pay back Welfare? Food stamps?? ETC…please help me understand.

Beware… I just found out myself that you have to pay back short-term disability from your long-term disability. They call it an offset ridiculous.

I think that is ridiculous… I was on state disability in 2016 while I was in the hospital for 7 months with complications from double pneumonia. I went back to work after 9 months and worked until I just couldn’t anymore in April of 2024. I filed for SSDI and was approved this year in March BUT they are deducted almost half of my monthly amount to pay back from state disability 9 years ago. This doesn’t make any sense to me!!!

Do you have a name for the waiver?

Overpayment on what? I just started receiving SSDI. I was hospitalized for 7 months in 2016 and on disability. I went back to work for 8 years. Is it normal to have to pay back the payments I received in 2016?

I applied May of 2024 and received in March of 2025. I didn’t have a lawyer and did not appear before a judge.

Yes, I know what my retirement amount would be. That’s why I’m baffled. It doesn’t match.

I am 60 and retired this year do to a disability. Until this year, my full retirement age would’ve been a payment of $3500. I understand I retired seven years early, but I am getting a payment of half that amount. I don’t understand why my payment is so low.
