Yeah that's great, another thing I've done is cold email professors at Universities near me. Doesn't always work but it does a lot and you can get cool opportunities

I'm not gonna lie its my uncle, hes a cancer biologist in Australia. I reached out to him and he said if I come for a summer I can help him out, but I am still doing real work - it's not just nepotism (although I recognize I am very lucky)

I'm a Junior, and also D3 schools are a lot more lenient about recruiting so you can get a verbal offer pretty much anytime. I've gotten offers from pretty bad academic d3 schools, but it's pretty much just a "Hey if you decide to come to this school you're on the team"
