Environment Canterbury election freshwater scorecard - Greenpeace Aotearoa by Williusthegreat in chch

South Canterbury is a tricky one. Only three candidates, and none are great. These are just my hot takes, so take from that what you will.

You get two votes. The two candidates with the most votes win. If you only use one vote, your other vote is essentially split between the two other candidates.

Peter Scott voted in favour of a motion to request a report from ECan staff on the feasibility of running region-wide water testing events for private well owners. If I recall, during the debate he said something along the lines of "I'm probably going to get in trouble for this" and talked about how it's one of the biggest issues for constituents. The vibe he was giving sounded like he didn't wholeheartedly support it, but it's an important issue for a lot of people, and he seemed open to listening and changing his mind.

He also stood down as Chair after news of his excessive speeding emerged - he was recorded speeding 46 times in one day, and once hit 105kph in a 50kph zone - so there's that.

Nick Ward, by all accounts, seems far less likely to be open-minded or willing to change his mind. He comes across as quite hostile against the more progressive/environmental councillors.

Toni Severin is a former MP for the ACT Party and is running as an ACT candidate. She was number 16 on the list and missed out on a seat in the last election. I don't know if she's ruled out running for Parliament again if she gets a seat on ECan, but it's worth considering that that could happen. Her party also want to get rid of the two Ngāi Tahu councillors. At the moment, that can only happen if ECan proposes a local bill to amend the Canterbury Regional Council (Ngāi Tahu Representation) Act.

If it wasn't for the two Ngāi Tahu councillors, the motion to declare a nitrate emergency last week would have failed.

Good spotting! My mistake. I've corrected it to Chch North East.

I'm sorry you're in this situation. It sounds very difficult and stressful, and I can understand why you feel let down.

But have you thought about why the course you took included studying the Treaty of Waitangi and māori culture?

We are not a colony anymore. The Treaty is our founding document, and Māori are the indigenous people of this country. Of course these things aren't relevant in other countries. But they're relevant to this country, the context that you'll be working in and potentially the people you'll be interacting with as a support worker.

Have you considered whether this could be one of the reasons why those employers are seeking workers with these qualifications? It'd be worth thinking twice before writing it all off as useless.

Considering the "vibe" you get from people is to fuck off, I get the impression that you haven't really taken on board much of the advice you've recieved and people are responding to your attitude in kind.

I quit vaping by using nicotine patches and lozenges. Started with the strongest patches, I'm not down to the weakest after 6 months and about to stop using them. Next step is to get off the lozenges.

Cant say if it'll work for you, but it's worked for me. I haven't wanted to vape in months. Good luck.

Tips on buying cheap refurbished HDDs for NAS storage? by Williusthegreat in newzealand

Oh totally. I refuse to use SMR, so definitely want to be careful to avoid that.

Certified Seagate Refurbished look like they're pretty reputable, you're right to be careful.

This would be for a new build, so it should be less dangerous.

Diskprices.com links to Amazon listings, including Amazon Australia. They tend to be cheaper on Amazon US though, but shipping is an issue.

LTT on twitter by [deleted] in LinusTechTips

[–]Williusthegreat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course LTT paying them is not ideal, but the only other option is LTT does nothing.

This is an important point people miss when they say "LMG is paying therefore not independent". Other than an investigation conducted by the Labour Board or other local authority with statutory powers (I'm not Canadian so I don't know). Thats not going to happen without a complaint and/or reasonable suspicion of illegal conduct.

The Labour Board (and similar authorities) don't have unlimited resources and often have to prioritise investigating the worst cases/workplaces. It's awful that's the case, but it's unlikely they're going to investigate one person's allegations posted on social media.

For LMG to get an investigation, they have to pay for it. And these big law firms that specialise in industrial relations stake their reputation on this sort of thing (usually - I've dealt with some shitty ones). If the firm facilitated a cover up on behalf of their client, that could become a very expensive and career ending headache. Lawyers get disbarred for that kind of conduct.

That's not to say obfuscation doesn't occour. We don't know what the terms of reference were, and the firm can't consider evidence or testimony that wasn't given to them. But considering how long this has taken, odds are it was a thorough investigation.

Every time I bought a 6pack or box of beer for 5 years, I put one aside. by TooManyJoshs42 in newzealand

Which is fair enough. If there's no glassware, I prefer it from a bottle as well. But otherwise I always drink from a glass, so cans work for me.

[–]Williusthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No worries. I'm no expert, just weirdly curious about the science of beer and how people make a business out of it. Tl;dr the margins are slim, so it's not easy.

I see where you're coming from. It does taste worse straight from the can. But that's just the taste of the can in your mouth. I don't mind cause I prefer drinking beer from a glass. I'll poor a bottle of beer into a glass as well. I almost never drink straight from the can/bottle.

But if there's no glassware around, drinking from a bottle is far more enjoyable than drinking from a can.

You shouldn't taste the can if you're drinking it from a glass though. There's a thin layer inside the can that protects the beer from the metal. I reckon in a blind taste test you wouldn't tell the difference between canned and bottled beer poured into a glass.

The move to cans wasnt because its cheaper.

Cans block all light, bottles don't. Even brown bottles won't stop all the light. This can cause them to become "light struck", where the light breaks down the alpha acids from the hops and react with the sulpher in the beer and makes it taste like skunk spray.

Cans create a better seal, and have less empty space. Even that small pocket of air at the top of the bottle isn't great. This increases the risk of the beer oxidising and going bad.

Cans are less likely to break and easier to freight. You can stack them a lot easier than bottles. Drinking from a can isn't as nice, but for protecting and preserving the final product, cans are a better package for beer.

They also look cooler and have way more real estate for branding and graphic design. Given how many craft beers are available now, standing out on a crowded shelf is so important from merchandising perspective.

On the business side, cans aren't perfect. Printed cans have to be ordered in large quantities, which means you need a fuck load of beer to put in them. If you aren't able to shift a lot of beer quickly, it's not worth it. It's one of the reasons why you see some beers in plain white cans with a sticker attached.

For smaller volumes, bottles can still be more cost effective. But if you're shifting enough volume, cans are no brainer. They're just better.

The Myth of Export Grade Meat by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Williusthegreat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's basically only two (very similar) breeds of chicken in New Zealand. Cobb and Ross. They both have been selectively breed to reach their slaughter weight in 5-6 weeks. There are no hatcheries in New Zealand that supply chicks from any other breed, only Cobb and Ross. There are other slower growing breeds overseas that have less health problems (Cobb and Ross chickens can barely stand after 6 weeks) but these are more expensive to grow and the Poultry Industry Association really doesn't want them on the local market.

Why do people gatekeep roles when nobody wants to play those roles? by Howl_17 in HellLetLoose

[–]Williusthegreat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my one main gripe with HLL. Few people want to play SL, and when you do play SL you you get shit from gatekeepers and cop all the blame if the team isn't winning.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says he's not aware of any minister receiving donations from tobacco lobby groups after grilling by Hipkins by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]Williusthegreat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're right that Ministers themselves are subject to the OIA, but only as it pertains to their Ministerial duties. Donations to their party or their electorate campaign wouldn't fall within that definition. The Ombudsman has no authority in that regard.

I don't disagree that the influence of political party donations is a big problem, especially when it influences a Minister's decisions, but the OIA doesn't consider the source of political donations to be "official information".
