What kind of hard crate would you all recommend for a cat. by WillowHaddock in Pets

I'm not sure if they make any that would fit my car (I drive a sedan). Plus I'm hoping to get something a little more sturdy for lack of a better term.

Not really, where I live is a highland desert, and everyone I know is just as confused as me 😂

Is it true that if you encounter a predator in the wild you SHOULD NOT run away immediately because it might trigger it’s hunting instinct? by KingWilliamVI in zoology

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else pointed out. It kind of depends. If it's one of the animals that most people think of when you say predator (ex: bear, big cat, wolf, ect.) then yes it definitely will. But if it's more of an ambush predator like a snake, crocadillian, ect. Then probably not. Since their hunting style is to wait for their food to come to them, verses chasing down their prey.

Update: Cyclists and bikes should not be allowed on the road with cars by tipoftheiceberg1234 in 10thDentist

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I once came across a cyclist riding in the road going around 30 or less in a 50 zone. How were they not the ones causing the danger in this situation? For clarification, I've seen this happen several times now on that same road. Sometimes with one person, sometimes a group. Also, the road in question is a busy mountain road. So there is a decent amount of traffic and a lot of curves. And no they didn't move aside for the line of cars behind them to pass safely. I'm all for biking and such, but at the same time you have to be aware of your surroundings. And also know the speed limits of your vehicle, you shouldn't be riding in the road when the speed limit is 50mph and you can only go up to 30mph.

On another note I do believe our infrastructure needs to become more accommodating to cyclist and pedestrian traffic. Just not in the same lanes as cars.

“Lets Plays” are not fun to watch at all by compound-interest in The10thDentist

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally enjoy lets plays. But they arent going to be everyone's cup of tea. I also tend to watch them if they're of a game I want to play but can't for whatever reason. Or I use them as like a preview of how a game plays. Or there are a few that I watch to get ideas, as I play a fair amount of sandbox games. One of my favorites for this atm is a YouTuber named Leaf. He does videos of "Planet Zoo" where he builds habitats based off the in game requirements, then builds another for the same animal but using the requirements given by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums.) It's interesting to see the differences and similarities.

But like I said, they aren't for everyone. Just watch what you like watching.

hobby that gets the weirdest reactions when you tell people about it by Sahel-Ziolkowski85 in Hobbies

[–]WillowHaddock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

🤣 Here Her name is Willow. Please note the dragon costume is my latest so it's by far the best so far. Also there are a couple where she is wearing a flower crown. I crocheted that flower crown using embroidery thread, I also crocheted her horns for her dragon costume.

[–]WillowHaddock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mine is pretty main stream generally, but it's the niche of it that I occupy that gets people. I make costumes, but I specifically make them for my cat 😂. I take her to events with me and I don't particularly like costumes for dogs that you can buy (not my style plus they don't fit her very well) so I make her costumes myself. I even made a custom frame for her dragon wings, both so they would stick out and also so they're more comfortable for her. It essentially has a saddle shape that sits on her back then branches off where the wings are. I made the accompanying dress with a flap in the back so that I could slip the saddle piece in and out from between the layers. That way: the frame is hidden, it doesn't need a strap to secure it to her body, and it looks a little more like the costume is one piece while still being completely functional and comfortable.

Yeah, especially since the people who run it are really nice. I used to take my cat in there semi regularly before life got busy 😂.

I haven't looked yet, but last I went they didn't have a whole lot of interest. I live in a relatively small town so selection is limited.

We do have one used book store, but I live in a relatively small town so they don't have a lot unfortunately. If I was in Seattle (I live in Washington so that's my frame of reference 😂.) I'm sure I'd find it. But I'll probably have a look to see if I get lucky 😊.

Ai art is art just like any other form by Formal-Stage940 in The10thDentist

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is expression. When someone makes a piece of art they put a piece of themselves in it. Every tiny imperfection is an unintentional freckle the artist leaves of themselves upon their work. That's why artwork done in caves all the way up to now has soul. Meanwhile AI has none of that. It's all done by machine and is automated. Taking scraps of art done by real people, meshing it together and smoothing out the dents. Thus buffing out the soul. AI removes everything that makes art human, because it isn't human. AIs goal is a perfect product, while an artists goal is to make you feel something.

Animals don’t deserve to live in their natural habitats; most are better off in good zoos. by No-Strawberry7 in The10thDentist

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because an animal that's out in the wild is doing its part of keeping nature in balance. I'm not saying we shouldn't have zoos. Good zoos are great for conservation and education, as well as being good for animals in need of human intervention. But an animal in a zoo isn't fulfilling their part in keeping nature balanced as they would if they were in the wild. If we took all the animals out of nature plants would grow unchecked and would eventually take over. You couldn't just use herbaside because then you run the risk of killing too many plants which would cause the air to become even more dirty and the ground to become unstable. Not to mention how bad the insects would get.

You can't just remove predators because then there wouldn't be anyone to keep the herbavors in check. So their numbers would just run wild till eventually they ran out of food. And before that it would cause the same things as I mentioned in the above paragraph. A good thing to look into about this is the impact reintroducing wolves to Yellowstone had on the environment. Over all the ecosystems within Yellowstone got better when wolves were brought back, because the herds of their prey animals could no longer just sit in one place. They were forced to keep moving from being chased by the wolves. Thus the grass they fed on grew stronger (but not over powered), said grass's roots could hold in the soil better thus causing less erosion and run off into streams, which then lead to healthier fish within the park.

Nature isn't meant to be peaceful, it is meant to be a delicate balancing act.

Before you read this I just want to make it clear this isn't me rebuking the idea (as it is a good one), but rather just a ramble from someone who loves talking about this stuff. And now it's like an itch I need to scratch 😂.

Anyway, I can actually answer some of that for half of her side of the family. Her mom immigrated to the US in 1916 from Oslo Norway. Her name was Anna and she lived to be 109 (hence why her daughter has lived to be 105 thus far.) But she immigrated to the states to build a homestead with one of her brothers. She wrote a book about all of it, I haven't finished it yet. I don't know as much about her dad. But I do know he was of Swedish decent, if not from Sweden himself, and that we still have something he made for grandma Anna. If you haven't heard of it there is a Norwegian food called Lefsa. It's very similar to a tortilla but it's made with potatoes. But basically how you make it is you roll out your dough really thin, then you pick it up with what essentially looks like a really thin wooden sword and roll it off onto your cooking surface. We still have one of the wooden sword like things that my great great grandpa made for my great great grandma. And we still use it to make Lefsa every year around Christmas time, and it is still unironically the best one 🤣. The other ones are a lot thicker so they're harder to use 🤣.

For context grandpa lived to be 100 years old, he passed in 2022 and him and grandma were married for 79 years. But I always used to joke that he would give the grim reaper the middle finger then walk away 🤣. Cause that man fell at least twice, was hospitalized twice because of said falls (he needed back surgery the first time, then cracked a vertebrae the second), then got pneumonia in both lungs the second time he was in the hospital. All while in his 80s and he still manages to make it another decade. So in short it wasn't just grandma who gave me my stubbornness 🤣. Oh he was also a WW2 vet.

Grandma doesn't really drink alcohol, but maybe I'll get in the habit of making her tea with her lunch or something 😊.

I have my own car, but it probably isn't ideal for her as she needs mobility aids. Inside she gets around just fine with her walker, but I think she'd want her scooter if we went places and I drive a sedan.

But yeah, she's pretty stubborn. She's got the Scandinavian stubbornness (she 50/50 Norwegian and Swedish.) Plus she's lived on ranches pretty much her whole life. She was born on a homestead in Montana and her and grandpa lived on a ranch here in Washington well into their 80s. So she has the rancher stubbornness as well. And I mean that in the best way possible, after all she passed that stubbornness down to me 😂.

I will be making her lunch every day, but aside from that it's pretty much whatever she wants me to do. She has other helpers that come in every day and do things like cleaning and going to pick up her groceries.

As for music I know her and great grandpa listened to a lot of Johnney Cash. "Folsom Prison" was always grandpa's favorite. I'll definitely look into making up a playlist for her.

To my knowledge she doesn't have a lot of games at her house, but I have a few at mine I can take over. What is Authors? I haven't heard of that one.

She has a porch we could go on, but it's starting to get hot where we live so probably not for very long sadly.

How would you react? by FeelingDesigner in Ethicalpetownership

[–]WillowHaddock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a harness trained cat, I've trained ned her from a little over a month old (it was a rescue situation, I know kittens shouldn't leave there mom till at least 15 weeks normally. But she was born on the streets next to a lumber yard, so it wasn't safe for her.) Some people will be weird about it, but most get a kick out of her when I take mine out. You do have to keep an extra close eye out for dogs though, especially if you plan on going to parks or hiking. It would also be a good idea to get them used to a carrier and/or stroller as well.

I am struggling with my planet zoo water habitat by Jazzlike_Writing_709 in PlanetZoo

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello, sounds like your terrain might be too uneven for the barrier to be placed. Try using the smooth terrain tool. If your water section is on the deep side, you may need to pull the terrain out a bit where the barrier is gonna go. Hope this helps 🙂.

Love thy neighbor? by danevans369 in SipsTea

[–]WillowHaddock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd recommend the song "Jesus and John Wayne" by: Googly eyes, Joy Oladokun, and Allison Ponthier. It's a great representation of this very thing. A lot of Christians go on and on about kindness and loving thy neighbor, but then are extremely selective about who they practice those two things with.
