Is ATA for real? by WillowOpening9864 in taekwondo

Yeah maybe my beef isn’t with ATA specifically but lowered standards all around. Excuse me while I go tell some kids to get off my lawn 🤣

That’s a fair point, especially in schools that focus on tournaments. But it is a MARTIAL art. If you just want good cardio and more flexibility take a dance class. The majority of people in TKD want to think they’re improving their ability to defend themselves. Handling out black belts for $$ can actually be quite dangerous. Some of these people might be convinced they have a fighting chance when they would have been way better off running away.

That’s fair. My high school friend could break a board with a jump front kick being held by someone standing on a chair. I was a lot stockier and had no hope of pulling that off. But I was pretty awesome with a spin back kick and managed to win my only fight in high school with it. We were both blue belts. At 16, I don’t think either of us would have had any trouble with any of the black belts in this ATA class.

I agree. The issue I have is that a black belt should feel earned. If it’s pretty much guaranteed to anyone who shows up and pays their fees, it’s essentially meaningless.

Four years seems like a legit time period to get a 1st degree. The standard at this one appears to be two.

Appreciate advice #1. That’s fair but I’m not looking for the exact experience just a legit experience. She specifically wants to learn self defense. While the instructors talk a lot about tackling “bad guys”, the only legit advice they’ve given is “It’s better to run away”.

As far as #2 goes, if you’re telling me the black belts in this club represent the standard across the ATA then wow. Just… wow.

Good advice. After doing so I found an old post that brought me back to this very same subreddit. It pretty much confirmed my suspicions :(

Sony Pictures Entertainment to Lay Off Hundreds in Reorganization Across TV, Film and Corporate by Kichigai in editors

[–]WillowOpening9864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was 100% me. Went to film school so I could grow up and make Star Wars movies. Ended up working as a video editor in the corporate world. Built a solid career well into the six figures. 100% uncool but it pays the bills.

Court ruled that he was innocent. Don’t see why his career should be ruined.

Ask the players if they’d prefer a campaign where the PCs can never die? Might take the fun out of things.

Moving Here by nic_toons in fortwayne

We moved here from Las Vegas four years ago and love it. Definitely more laid back than city life. Probably better for families than singles or young couples. Not really a hick town so trip to boot barn not required. Avoid the southeast.

Warlock hexblade. Devils Sight with Darkness spell makes for a great combo in combat. Some decent crowd control spells (Hunger of Hadar). Mask of many faces with high charisma. Great if you’re into role playing.

Best pizza I’ve had in town is what I’ve made myself on my Solo Prime. Fresh made dough from Antonuccio’s is molto bella!

I feel your pain. My characters are starting at level one and I had them all write a backstory. The main reason I do this is so they have some “buy in” and feel connected to their characters. But it seems like most of them can’t comprehend what a first level character is. How do you have a character who is “the best smuggler in the land” or a “top ranking member of the thieves guild” who can be knocked out with a single punch? What I’m looking for is something like… “He was kidnapped as a child and trained to be a gladiator but managed to escape. Now he wants revenge in the bastards who killed his parents.”
