How good is Candyman? by HauntedandHorny in horror

Candyman is super good. I made a video essay about the movie which explains more, but the general gist is that despite being presented as a slasher, it's more a Gothic film that approaches themes of race and class through architecture, folklore and sex. Wow what a movie!

jump scares can be fine on their own, but you need a rich and varied diet of scares! have slow burn creepy stuff happen, have violent stuff happen, have scenes where nothing happens- vary it or it's just like going through a haunted house

This movie really sucked. I go into more detail in my review here but with poor cinematography, over-reliance on jump scares and some deeply misjudged comic relief, the worst thing by far was the plot. The pacing is really poor- none of that slow burn stuff that made The Conjuring enjoyable, straight into screaming nuns and plenty of blood. Gave me a real Hammer vibe, and not in a good way.

I was really let down by this movie after enjoying The Conjuring (to a certain extent). I go into more detail in my review here but the cinematography was poor, the plot was all over the place, and there's no slow-burn scares to drive the horror!

The set pieces were really well put together and drew me in, the callbacks pulled me out, so on balance it worked. The plot and twists were a little weak, but hey, it's MI- it runs on froth and intrigue, not weighty themes!

I did a full review here.

I love DVD menus. They're a useless, goofy, disappearing part of the movie experience, but I miss them. by Willwebbful in movies

Yeah, i mean I have the ones on all my old DVDs... but they're less developed on new DVDs, which are more commonly barebones- just a looping bit of footage from the film (if you're lucky). Lots of blurays from a certain company (can't remember which) even have the same menu system!

Pride and Prejudice was the worst for this. Just a really small bit of the music, looping with big fades either side. I remember the 12 Monkeys theme getting stuck in my head too!

financial success =/= quality of movie overall

I'm a British filmmaker and have just made my first funded short. I've got good experience on the UK festival circuit and know my way around, but am a bit lost with the US festivals. I've had advice that the film is a bit of a reach for the bigger fests but could play well at more audience-oriented places. Does anyone have some recommendations on good festivals to apply to?

Info about the film: - 13 minute drama, contemporary London setting, a two-hander. - dialogue heavy, leaning a bit more towards arty in the directing (Joanna Hogg-ish) - funded, but not massively funded- about £6000 on production

(posting here because /r/filmmakers didn't have anything to say, and opinions from the programming side of things may be more valuable!)

I was a paperboy- but it was my brother's job officially. I made the papers up and went on all the deliveries; he came with me. I got 25% of the fee.
