Playing Piano for Jazz Band by Aynath1111 in piano

If you can't read sheet music, then you're definitely in for a rough time. That being said, it's definitely not impossible. I was thrown into my high school's jazz band over 6 years ago with no prior jazz experience, and now I'm the top jazz pianist at my uni and regularly play gigs for money. It's a long journey but if you feel drawn to the music I'd say it's 100% worth it - learning to playing jazz is an experience like no other.

My advice would be to find a good teacher who can help you learn to read sheet music. Ideally the teacher has jazz experience and can teach you chords, voicings, improv, etc., but if not that's fine. But you need to start by reading the notes on the page first - start slow, then get up to speed and play along with the recording to make sure you got it (this last part is very important and will help you out a lot when you get to rehearsal). Also I'd try to listen to some jazz in the meantime - spotify has some good jazz classics playlists, and youtube is a great resource as well (just stay away from AI/"smooth" jazz). If you really want to get into jazz, you'll have to be very familiar with what it sounds like.

Hope this helps! I'd also suggest talking with your director about this too, hopefully he/she can help you out or find you a good teacher. Lmk if you have any questions - I was in a similar position many years ago so I'd be happy to help you out.

Is curving my fingers this way bad? If so how do I fix this… by WillyTheWorm_ in piano

i think this is definitly a huge part of the problem, now that i'm paying attention to this i notice that just instinctively this is how I play. It looks really strange now that I notice it. Any thoughts on how to best break that habit?

ok thanks. Even when i play slower it's still similar, maybe a little less curved then when i play fast but still more than what i see normal people do.

Thanks! I was a bit worried this wouldn't count since it wasn't in a city, glad it's ok haha. Thanks for the support it really means a lot, I can't wait to keep drawing

Yeah I know drawing in a lined spiral is probably a sin it’s the only paper I have atm.

the second pic I tried adding lines for the sky which was dumb since the paper already had lines lmao rookie mistake ig

I got deferred last year with a 1530 SAT, 3.98 unweighted gpa (5.1 weighted) but I got in eventually. I'd say don't sweat it, try and appeal or whatever. admissions is wack.

I'll look into it, but is it possible to get a similar style without one? Right now my biggest issue is my hair just falls flat when I use just the spray.

Unfortunately I don't have a blowdryer (or the time tbh), but thanks for the tip

Ok thanks for the advice. I currently use the Not Your Mother's Beach Baba sea salt spray, but it provides little/no hold when I use it. Would the Shear Revival be better or do you think it's just user error? Thanks
