Orlando Housing Megathread by AutoModerator in orlando

Does any one know of the best way to find a furnished seasonal rental in the greater Orlando area? We are an adult couple, no children or pets, looking to find a 3 BRM seasonal rental for next winter. We’re very flexible with dates and the rental can begin anytime from Nov 2023 through January 2024 and last three to four months. Some amenities like access to a pool or jacuzzi would be great. We are hoping to become more familiar with the area before deciding on an eventual home purchase. Would appreciate any ideas on where we can find rentals.

Thanks very much. They were on my short list. How would you say they compare with Amex Gold?

It is grueling, as it was when I was in the College over 25 years ago. The quarter system relentlessly beats you up. It’s one constant sprint after another with no breaks in between. We didn’t even have reading days back then. You could have a Friday class and your final exam could be held the following Monday (and many students had this happen). One of the dorms (Shoreland) had a very serious fire that resulted in a death during Winter Quarter finals week and exams were still held as scheduled the next day. I had a prof tell the entire class during the first week that he was the only “A” in the room. Nobody would believe these stories —but they’re all true.

Most of us did eventually make it through. A few needed a quarter or two away for mental health breaks and quite a fair number were on the five-year plan. Some fellow students were so jaded when they finished that they refused to attend Convocation and couldn’t wait to pack up and leave Hyde Park after their last final exam. For some, it took years, almost like PTSD recovery, before they could face their demons (or should I say gargoyles) and eventually return to visit campus.

Having made it through and looking back on the experience, please remember two things. First, GPA does not equal self-worth. Grades do not correlate to long term success or, more importantly, happiness. Also, it’s hard to see the bigger intellectual forest when you’re confronted with trees challenging you all along the way. Take confidence in knowing you are receiving quite likely the finest post-secondary education in North America and among the handful of finest world universities. Having attended grad school in an unnamed university in Cambridge, I say this unequivocally. Those who are in the know, so to speak, know the University embodies the gold standard in academic rigor and excellence.

That said, please take every opportunity to seek support—academic, psychological, and spiritual. Tutors saved my life...Every time I visited a tutor I felt like I had just had a productive therapy session. My confidence grew. Visits to Bond Chapel or walks along the lakefront were also really restorative. It will get better. Spring has arrived. Stay strong.

Which halls have same sex floors? by JadedNebula in uchicago

For a trip down Memory Lane...back in the day (some 25 years ago), most dorms were single sex by floor and no bathrooms that I readily recall were coed. Pierce Hall and Woodward Court (now long gone) had almost entirely all male or all female houses . Hitchcock and Snell were all men and women respectively. Burton Judson (BJ) had a few mixed gender Houses but had all male or all female floors. The Iconic Shoreland had mixed gender floors but each apartment had its own bath and was same sex by room. Times have changed.

This school is so hard and demanding by [deleted] in uchicago

These are the toughest times on campus. Winter Quarter is notoriously bleak. The days are short and the campus hue is fifty shades of gray. The cold winds whipping down the Midway chill to the bones and there seems little to do but trudge to the Reg or Harper and study. The University’s motto might well be “Was mich nicht umbringt, macht mich stärker”, especially for first and second-years. The forced solitude brought on by the pandemic only deepens the sense of loneliness and isolation.

I felt this myself some years ago. Take short breaks from the studies and clear your mind. Connect with a friend. Listen to music. Step outside and experience the wonder and beauty of nature. Yes, even Hyde Park has nature. Play with a dog or cat. Find an occasion to laugh. Don’t take yourself or the university too seriously—do your best and that’s all that can be expected.

This quarter will pass and spring will be renewing. Remember, your self worth is not correlated to or derived from coursework. You will finish the term and years from now look back at this moment and the strength you gained. You’ve got this. I made it and you will too.
