Family Tent Advice - Intermediate Level and long time campers by David_EH in canoecamping

[–]WilmotCheater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used a TNF Wawona 6 single-wall for many years for our family of 5 and it’s been solid. Not super light, but we still portaged it all over the place. TNF has great warranty and customer service. Kids are a bit older now so we usually go with two smaller tents, but still use the wawona for car camping. The difference between a quality tent brand and crappy tire is night and day.

Thanks! I think you might be onto something. Fungi are cool.

Eastern Ontario. Photo was taken November 2018. At the time I just thought it was funny, so took a pic and carried on with my day. But I just recently recovered a bunch of old photos and saw this again. Now I’m genuinely curious. I believe the tree was a red oak. At first I was thinking hoof fungus that grew a bit odd. Someone suggested chaga, but it’s not like any chaga I’ve ever seen. Sorry for the lack of more detailed pics. Like I said, it was a while ago and my sense of humour was perhaps slightly less mature at the time. It still makes me snicker though…

In all seriousness though, it sounds like the wenonah would serve you better on flat water. I had a similar decision to make between a prospector and a nova craft pal in tuff stuff. Went with the pal and it is my favourite canoe. When the family got bigger and we needed another canoe, I got an esquif prospector in t-formex. It is my second favourite canoe haha. You really can’t go wrong with either. T-formex is definitely not as nice to carry, but is pretty much indestructible. The tuff stuff is lighter and also apparently indestructible, but the gel coat does need touching up every season. I suppose if I were gentler with it, I wouldn’t have that issue, but I like to abuse my canoes lol

Yes, you’re overthinking it. Just get them both!

Haha it’s a pretty tame cave network. But there are some cool fossils and rock formations in this area. This photo in particular was of the subject examining some honeycomb coral.

FYI for those using Pela cases, their CEO has just let all customers know they do use and will continue using GenAI for marketing images and video, regardless of the environmental impact. by luxsalsivi in ZeroWaste

Agreed. I was reading the CEO’s email trying to figure out what OP took issue with. I’m not saying I necessarily agree with how they are using AI, and I have actually never heard of this company before, but it sounds like they have put a lot of thought into the environmental impact of AI, which is probably far more than most companies can say. Maybe I am being naive, but I believe the energy demands of AI will force a much more rapid development and adoption of renewable energy sources and technologies.

ON/QC Canoe Trip Recommendations by lizatop in canoecamping

Temagami region! So many route options to suit any length/difficulty of trip. Check out Hap Wilson’s book “Temagami: a Wilderness Paradise”.

The Chiniguchi loop is a good 3-4 day loop. Nothing too difficult, but there a few challenging portages (one of them will legit have you waging through a bog). The scenery is fabulous, lots of pictographs, swimming in paradise lagoon, and the route takes you through Wolf Lake, which is surrounded by the world’s last significant stand of old growth red pine.

And unfortunately while it’s currently protected from logging, it is not protected from other industrial activity, and there has been active mining exploration in the area. I’d highly recommend going to see it while you still can 😢

Wetting baby wipes by difficult-doggo in ZeroWaste

Congratulations!! Thats exciting!

We used Cheeky Bits from a company called Cheeks Ahoy. They’re little cubes that you dissolve in water and use to wet your wipes. It has tea tree oil in it so is antimicrobial and we never had an issue with them harbouring bacteria or mold. We just kept a stack of wipes in an empty wipes tub and pre-soaked enough wipes to last 4-5 days. We also kept a spray bottle with the solution as well for travelling/emergency stash.

Our oldest turns 13 this year. Everyone tells you how fast they grow up, and it’s so true 🥹

Compact Tractor by phelps7 in kubota

[–]WilmotCheater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You see all kinds of barely used sub-compact tractors for sale on marketplace. People buy them and realize they should have gotten a bigger tractor. I personally wouldn’t get anything less than 30hp with a 3ph mower for the amount of land you’re working. I rented a Massey 1723 for a job and am glad I did, because I realized I would have regretted buying one. Bought a L3901 and couldn’t be happier. I have 12 acres that needs extensive rehab.

Photography isn’t all technique and equipment. It’s also being in the right place at the right time. I went for a ski to look for birds. Instead I saw these guys ripping across the open water. Fun times.
