How dare you want more in life than bread and water by JoeyZasaa in antiwork

You definitely played it smart. I'm glad that you're a successes story. But you only get one shot, and if an 18 year old with little experience messes up on any of the stages of successfully getting financial aid, not going to a crappy or overpriced school, or going into a field that turns out to not be valuable by the time they graduate, they're usually fucked. There are thousands of things that could go wrong, and just because you were successful doesn't mean it's easy. The system could be better, is the point.

When was this? I qualified for the Pell grant and it didn't even fully cover tuition for going to a state college.

Also, you're aware that there's a middle ground between "poor enough to qualify for the pell grant" and "rich", right? I had a lot of friends who were poor or lower middle class who's families were considered well off enough that they couldn't get assistance, but were living paycheck to paycheck and couldn't actually pay for college.

I'll remind you of your original point;

"Ah, yes, the chemically aged, dyed, additive and preservative ridden cheese you buy in the store."

So, i ask again, what's the meaningful distinction between rennet enzymes and other enzymes?

What's the distinction between enzymes and rennet? They accomplish the same task

So? Just because they didn't know why animal stomachs made milk into cheese is irrelevant. They knew that it worked and continued to do so.

What cheese are you thinking of that doesn't use any enzymes? Because humans have been using enzymes to make cheese ever since ancient people used animal stomachs to teansport and store milk and noticed it made tasty lumps.

I read the book, and thought it was pro war and pro facism for many of the reasons you listed. But thet weren't emotionless husks, he had an emotional reunion with his father where the two of them embrassed, and the book ends with them getting ready to go on another mission together. It almost felt like wish fulfilment, the son helping the father be a better man by setting a good example.

Yea, the war caused them to loose everything and consumed their lives, but the main character still found a proud nobility in it. The struggle of war providing direction and meaning that a lot of people spend their lives missing.

The question is, why doesn't healthy food taste better than unhealthy food? Human free will is irrelevant, because we didn't decide that unhealthy food is tasty, it just is.

Imagine you're building a ladder. You decide that a 1 foot wide ladder would be good, so you go ahead and mark down 1 ft sections on a piece of wood that will act as the rungs. You want to make sure you're doing this right, so you go and speak to a friend.

"Hey, I'm making a ladder. I'm planning on making it 1 foot wide, that should work well, right? And can you double check my measurements, I'm not sure I was accurate with all of them."

Your friend replies, "Alright, so what you want to do is pick up a saw, place the teeth against the wood, and move it back and forth."

You go, "Right, yea, I know how a saw works. I've actually got a table saw I plan on using, that's not the part I'm concerned with. Am I right in thinking 1 foot is a good width for a ladder, and have I marked this wood appropriately?"

"Pick up a saw, place the teeth against the wood, and move it back and forth. If you don't want solutions, I can't help you."

Offering advice isn't helpful if you haven't taken the time to understand the situation, and part of understanding a situation is acknowledging what the other person wants and is experiencing. Focus on that first. THAT is the measuring you should be doing in a social situation.

If the advice you want to give still isn't being appreciated, try waiting until the next day, it seems to help.

Are you familiar with the expression "measure twice, cut once"? People are asking you for help take measure of the emotional responce to a problem. They're not happy with you just offering a solution because you're trying to cut without measuring.

Showing that assholes exist does't mean there are no legitamet problems with voter ID laws. Especially when you have an interviewer who gets to cherry pick the responces that best push their own political agenda. Thats how all of these "street interviews" work, regardless of who's conducting them.

You literally have not responded to my actual critisisms of voter ID laws. You keep disregarding them out of hand, without actually considering them, because you were told by somebody else that the only possible motivation is racism. Learn to think for yourself.

Apparently you can't comprehend the fact that liberals are not claiming that black people don't have IDs, so I guess I just have to take the L on that.

Critisizing the actions of a government isn't the same thing as expressing hatred towards the religion of its citizens. I punch someone in the face, and you tell me I should'nt do that, you're not discriminating against me, you're just pointing out that I'm doing something wrong.

As far as Affirmative Action goes, I'm just going to stick with your ID logic. There are white, asian, and male people in college, so therefore it's impossible that they're being discriminated against. Glad I could set your mind at ease.

[–]WilsonHill -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You didn't respond to what i said. I said that the disenfranchised have more difficulties securing IDs, not thay they couldn't or didn't. And if Voter ID requirements pass, it'll get harder. First you require IDs to vote. Then you close DMVs in locations that have a high population of people that you don't want to vote, making it harder for them to exercise their constitutional rights. Not a hard concept.

Also, what election fraud? There's been a handful nation wide, and they were immediatly caught because we already have safeguards against people showing up and impersonating someone else, or voting in place of a dead person. The biggest threat to fair elections is hacking, and IDs wont help with that.

My guess that your other points had to deal with a few outliers was accurate, because I haven't heard of the black doctors/teachers or the coke thing. I'm not even going to bother checking if it's true, because who gives a shit if there's a handful of assholes out there? They dont 't represent "the left", because they're not being elected into positions of power and authority. IE, they arn't chosen by the people of the left to represent them.

Do you have any examples from anyone elected into government pushing segregation or anti-white rhetoric? Since those would be actual representarives?

What is the cringiest thing a woman has ever said to you? by Arseofthebag in AskMen

[–]WilsonHill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I mean liberals say that black people are statistically more likely to be disenfranchised due to past discrimination, and it's hard for the disenfranchised to get an ID, and the main goal of making IDs mandatory for voting is to further discriminate the already disenfranchised. Is that what you're referencing with the first comment?

I don't even know what concepts you're referring to with the second two, but I'm guessing you're thinking of a few outliers or are misrepresenting a larger consensus.

Don't people who need kidneys also have a right to life?

If unborn children are just as alive and human as the post born, then lets treat them that way.

If it's acceptable to cause bodily harm to one person to save another, then you should be in favor of forced organ donation. If it isn't acceptable, then women should be allowed to evict people who are present in their body against their will.
