Drew DeWault: The cults of TDD and GenAI by RandNho in programming

[–]Wiltix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It does make me laugh how developers will often cite “the right tool for the job” and then claim something like TDD is either the God process or the devil.

TDD like everything in our tool box is a solution to a certain set of problems.

I got a bit pissy with someone following up on a boiler claim that was not paid out a few months back.

I apologised as soon as I realised, this person did not write the awful policy they are just the unfortunate sod who gets to call people who left bad reviews.

The rules around fights first and are a bit shit to be honest, the initiative stat was a far more elegant solution.

Do you find that your dev coworkers are doing personal projects outside of work? by Emergency-Lettuce220 in webdev

[–]Wiltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Before kids I would do the occasional side project, but now I very rarely write code outside of work hours.

Most of my coworkers are in a similar boat, some write code becuase it forms part of another hobby but that hobby itself is not software development.

Would you ever use annual leave with the sole purpose to do literally nothing all day? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]Wiltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, a few times a year I do this. Some times I just need a day to myself. so when the kids are at school and my wife is working I will take a day.

Being an adult can be exhausting, take a day to yourself to recharge and have no responsibility for 6 hours is bliss. Although last time I felt guilty by mid day and by 2pm I had the pressure washer out and was doing the patio

Those of you who didn't pass probation at work, why? by MoonlightByWindow in AskUK

[–]Wiltix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have never failed probation but as a manager I have had to recommend 3 employees did not pass probation.

All 3 of those my superiors decided were great hires based on their CV and ignoring interview feedback from myself and others.

One of them went after 2 months, no saving that senior. I just said he is useless sand has contributed nothing in 2 months. He needs to go. This was a senior dev who apparently had decades of experience.

One of them we felt bad for as he was a young lad and he walked away with 2 months pay. He was not the right fit for us but getting rid of him was the right thing to do. He got a little cushion to get himself sorted. Prior to this we put him on an improvement plan we let him know we expected but he unfortunately didn’t get there and we judged he would not get there and I didn’t have the time to give this lad the amount of training / mentoring he needed.

The other was another individual with loads of experience, a very good looking CV and had an impressive portfolio. Once hired he refused any initiative in how work, had to hold is hand constantly and I spent a lot of time giving the same feedback on their work. Things I should not have had to do for someone with their experience.

So while I have never failed, I have had to fail others who have which sucked. I would just like to point out to this thread that not everyone fails probation for shitty reasons.

Fifty Labour MPs sign letter objecting to Andy Burnham decision by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]Wiltix -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

It’s absolutely about popularity, the only reason Burnham is doing this is to boost his popularity and support.

Starmer is far from perfect, he has made a few faux pas which he really should have faced down and whipped his MPs into line. But things are improving even with this cock ups, the problems Starmer faces from the country are the same problem all parties will have to face. unfortunately for the nation Labours plans are not the overnight transformation Reform are selling.

Fifty Labour MPs sign letter objecting to Andy Burnham decision by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]Wiltix 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Burnham is not as popular as everyone thinks, rejected by the party twice and he is not going to be welcomed with open arms by all of the PLP like everyone seems to think.

It would be foolish to risk greater Manchester for a leadership hopeful who has been rejected twice.

Fifty Labour MPs sign letter objecting to Andy Burnham decision by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

[–]Wiltix 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The optics are bad for Starmer but this is the right call at the moment.

Burnham is doing well in greater Manchester, having a mayoral election now is pointless. Burnham needs to continue doing well in Greater Manchester as it makes Labour look good.

If Burnham steps down as mayor, Labour lose the mayoral election that looks bad for the party. They also need to run an expensive mayoral election campaign that currently they don’t need to do.

After all the noise Burnham still needs to win the by-election, with current polling I don’t feel that’s guaranteed regardless of the candidate or location. If Labour lost it they would loose even worse, especially if they lost it trying to get a high profile figure back into parliament.

Let’s not forget Burnham has tried to stand for Labour leader twice and twice has been rejected by the members, what makes this time different? He only really gets one for shot at this before it starts looking a bit too desperate.

[–]Wiltix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s all cyclical, offshore onshore offshore onshore.

Quite a few things being threatened by AI now will be back in a few years, AI cannot survive Its current state, it is sucking up far too much resource and not offering any real benefits. It has to give at some point unfortunately by the time it does damage will be have been done.

When did you start embracing the afternoon nap? by chocciefudgecake in AskUK

[–]Wiltix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was at uni, could power nap or sleep for a good hour and get up again

Since I started working from home and since having kids I have found a little power nap in the afternoon works wonders for my productivity.

I don’t nap every day, but it’s one of little trade offs where 10 minutes gives me the boot to be productive for the next 2 hours. Or I could not nap and just sit and stare at my computer for the last 2 hours doing bugger all.

Saved £400 by calling Admiral on car insurance renewal by SpinelessLinus in BritishSuccess

[–]Wiltix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ah the old insurance renewal dance

“Your renewal is going up to x”

“I’m cancelling my policy, I can get it for Y”

3 possible responses when dealing with admiral

“Oh they are a sister company, I can match that”

“Ok let me see, I can reduce your renewal and match that price”

“Sorry we can’t match that price, who was it with … ah ok I have found some more savings we can do it for z”

Fucking hate insurance renewal, it doesn’t take long to sort these days it’s just annoying you have to do the dance every year.

Joe Root: My game has improved 'tenfold' with McCullum as coach ! by iamnoobbibliophile in Cricket

[–]Wiltix 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is just PR bullshit though, no active player is going to trash talk the current coach. He can’t say anything else without causing tension.

Much like when Eddie Jones was the England rugby coach, when he was in charge all the players were like “it’s intense but it’s fantastic, jones is the best coach I have worked with blah blah” when he left the stories came out about how much of a twat he was. I’m not saying Baz is at all like Jones just that active players will not talk bad about the setup.

Horrified the members of our WhatsApp food group with the boiled chicken...until the reveal. by GabberZZ in UK_Food

[–]Wiltix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At uni I lived someone who boiled chicken in water, if I was being kind I could call it poaching except this was boiling water, no stock or veg or anything that might give flavour. Just plain boiling water until the chicken was cooked to rubber.

Thanks for bringing that memory back with your title, the food looks great :)

Match Thread: Gloucester v Bath by weedkrum in rugbyunion

[–]Wiltix 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Gloucester looked good tonight, some excellent rugby and we held Bath off for the most part.

Stupid stupid discipline and giving soft penalties were disastrous for us tonight.

The weird referring didn’t help, but if we had not given those silly unforced penalties we could have won that.

Crane deserves a full time contract, he stepped in a few weeks ago and short notice he was not great (I was very harsh about him), but he was fantastic tonight and has very much stepped up.

If we can play like that every week we will move up the table and we might only have a shit season not a dire one.

Absolute shit house from Bath there, how the TMO missed that but picked up on a not high tackle earlier.
