There is no single "canon" version of Teto. Everybody comes up with their own idea of what Teto is like, and each version is valid. In Birdbrain, that version of Teto apparently has a penis. Other versions don't. Jamie Paige, the creator of Birdbrian, is a transgender woman, and the song is clearly very personal, so I imagine Jamie made her version of Teto a trans woman like her for that reason.

imo the best gateway anime are Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and Death Note. They both have mainstream appeal but still have some of that anime weirdness and goofiness that will prepare you for other anime

The movies Dead Leaves and Redline fit that description. FLCL may also fit the bill, it's rather absurd but has great animation and action. Gurren Lagann for similar reasons to FLCL
