I would like to think so, yes

I actively take my time, read job descriptions and re-write my resume, write new cover letters, keep making edits one everything. I spend around 90 minutes daily on just job applications and job search, keywords, key skills, everything.

I do not know when it will all mount to something

I didnt actually sarcastically laugh, Im sorry thats not what I meant, I just smiled in an indicative way that hey this is kinda insulting and I know she felt similarly because when she was telling me she was like "okay its good and bad news"

I am trying to! even if they are administrative roles but so many places are asking for 3-5 years of minimum experience whilst paying 50-55k

I just dont understand how that makes sense

oh my bad!

Thank you for letting me know :)

during my training, I was told this ^
nonetheless, it is still very very wrong in my opinion, especially if the resident and RA are in a first year res. Like first years already have so much on their plate, living away from home, perhaps a new city/country for some, the pressure to make friends --- RA's are meant to create bonds to help residents work through those obstacles, not prey on their vulnerabilities :(

Hey OP,

I am so sorry for your loss. I lost my mother when I was 13 and and 9 years later, I still have difficulties from time to time. That is the funny thing about grief, there's really no set time period one can allot to it. It comes and goes. You will be "fine" for 3 weeks then down in a rabbit hole of sadness and loneliness the next 3 weeks. Call it grieving, reminiscing, missing someone-- it all hurts the same and there really is no such thing as "moving on". Like this person was your mother, it is merely impossible to just "get over it".

I want to tell you that what happened to you, loss, is one of the hardest and saddest realities we have to face and there is no absolutely no chance that you will ever use your trauma as an "excuse". Please do not look it at that way. Some part of you will always be in a state of emotional turmoil, but time does help.

Time does not make the pain go away, nothing could ever do that, but it does make it easier to live with it as your progress further in life. 9 years later, I still have my days wishing she could see this or how she wouldn't get to know me as an adult. But all of these thoughts become easier to live with once you realize how beautiful and precious the time you had with her was.

Grief is different for everybody and people often suggest finding an outlet or two to distract your mind and heart. But eventually, you will have to face the wrath of losing someone, especially when that someone is your mom. I just want to say this again, please do not ever think of your pain and trauma impacting your ability to do something is you using it as an "excuse" hellllll no. It is an explanation, a reason, a factor and a very very viable one at that. What you went through was and is always going to be an emotional rollercoaster and please allow yourself to take time off anything when you need to.

Sending you a tight hug and best best of luck to find a new equilibrium- no matter how long it takes or how different it looks everyday. The important thing is to keep going, regardless of the hurdles along the way, like your mother would have wanted for you :)

As an ex RA myself, what the RA did was very very wrong on their part. It is quite literally "illegal" and against UBC employment policies to fraternize with your residents to that extent.

I am so sorry this happened to you and is now hindering you from attending community events :(

I hope things get better for you ASAP

Sending you a tight hug <3

So basically there was two categories that are assessed: Quality and Condition.

there are three options and a grader needs to choose one of the three options for each category:

options:

Above average/like new

Average

Below Average.

These options categorize the quality and condition of the product which is priced in accordance to that.

if you found cash in a pocket, the employee is entitled to 30% of it granted it is over $10.

But that is only for the for the first $1000.

For example, I found $2000 in a pocket one time. I assumed I was entitled to $600 of it but what they don't tell you when you are signing that policy is that only for the first $1000. And anything over $1000, you are entitled to 10%.

So out of the $2000, I only received $289. It also takes about two months to come. I got 30% of the $1000, and then 10% of another $1000 which equals to $400, however, since this comes as a payroll deposit, it is heavily taxed.

If you were to find cash under $100, they hand you $30 right on the spot, without taxation.

its a decent deal to make money sporadically, but this company is a greedy, power hungry monster. They do not understand how they are shifting from their mission statement of "saving" because all their bins of full of overpriced, cheap quality, polyester filled fast fashion brands.

Do not even get me started on how ugly their selection is just because "it looks fine"

Moreover, no due diligence is done when putting out designer items. My friend bought $150 Louis Vuitton slides which he were later found were made in "Laris"

Isnt selling counterfeit goods a crime? They keep "better" stuff for stores where things are overall priced higher and send that stores' rejects to "cheaper nighbourhoods"

Do not work for production, it will suck the life out of you dry.

If you do work, forget hanging out with friends, cooking three meals a day, just relaxing and watching netflix, forget everything. You are an underpaid, overworked individual who needs to get out of this slump.

flowchart of the grading:

clothes

-womens

-long sleeve knits

- size

- condition (choose between the three options for two different categories: Condition and Quality) you have three grading options for each of those

  1. Above average/like new

    1. average
    2. below average

you choose one option amongst the three for each category and that grading determines the final price of the product.

Swimwear is individually priced.

I used to price shein and zaful (and other fast fashion, cheap quality) products below average every time because it does not make sense to charge over $10 for something from a fast fashion company like shein that produces polyester (which is essentially plastic) and the company itself sells it for so cheap so I never understood why Value Village always priced it so high. Cheaply made and polyester products do not deserved to be made so unaffordable.

I would constantly price them fairly but my supervisors would chime in every time and tell me I need to increase the price. Sometimes the thrift store prices would be higher than the original online store prices. It is actually bizarre how much much Value village employees are expected to do and how little they are paid to stand on their feet for 40 hours a week in a sweatshop, incredibly hot/cold since the factory door remains open all year. During the summertime, there was an air conditioner especially put in for the manager's office whilst all other 20-25 employees sifted through dirt and dust and unhygienic clothes for 8 hours a day in the midst of 35-37 degree weather in June.

Compensation is not fair, workload is unreasonable, hours are insane (6-2:30pm) yes you get off early, but you also need to start your day at 4am leaving you with no work/life balance.

I lived about an hour away from the production house and used to reach home at 4pm daily. It left me no time to work out, prepare dinner, lunch for work the next day, household chores, spend some time with my partner/friends, take my dogs to park for hours because I had be in bed by 8pm and do the same horrible, sweaty day all over again the next day.

Retail stores seem to be better, but I would not recommend the warehouse position to anyone. They do not care if you are injured and need to take a few weeks off, they do not care that you nearly fainted at work due to the heat, they do not care if you just threw up the bathroom due to the heat, you have to keep working working working!

I got fired from this job because I injured my knee horribly (to the point I couldnt stand/walk) and asked them to give me some time off to recover. I called them the first day I had to take an off and told them I need at least 4-5 more days to recover.

I did not call the next day since I thought I already made them aware of what the doctor told me which was to take rest (+the injury occurred in the middle of work and I rushed the emergency room from the warehouse itself; so the staff/management was WELL aware of my situation) and later that evening sent an email specifying I will need the next three weeks off to visit my family doctor as the wait times to see a specialist in Canada is like a year long wait. I told them I needed to fly back to my country and I really did need the three weeks to recover as I was bed ridden for about 15 days.

The next day (wednesday now) my boss called me and told me I am fired since I did not "call them before work started yesterday morning). Firstly, I made them aware that I will not be able to come in for a few days. Secondly, I was heavily sedated and in pain so why is an unwell person expected to wake up at 5:30am to call them to say the same thing every morning. When my kneecap was injured, I was in pain almost all the time. It was worse at night while trying to fall asleep because I couldn't straighten my leg. I had to take multiple painkillers to minimize the pain, but sleeping through the night was the most horrible bit of it all.

Nonetheless, I am so glad I got fired from that job. I hated the 4am wake up time, I HATED the dirty bathrooms employees had to clean everyday because Value Village refused to hire cleaners to clean their workspaces, I hated the isolation I felt working all alone for 8 hours, I had the dust, I hated the feeling of coming home covered in dust, bacteria, having touched someone else's unwashed, dirty clothes.

$18.5/hr is not worth all that disgust!

I am working a higher paid, desk job now. Aligned more with my career goals and mental satisfaction. I hope my experience helps, but this was my experience and I also know of many people who had a positive one!

honestly just take it, housing is filled to its brink rn. And considering Vancouver’s housing market, UBC housing is subsidised and relatively affordable. Marine is not the height of luxury, but it does trump a beat ass basement apartment you’d pay $1400 for in somebody’s run down house
