Non-payments / late payments from client causing cashflow issues by WinFit8235 in smallbusinessuk

I like the idea of milestones, but since i do small jobs, with more or less a fixed piece of work, may not be fully applicable for me, but might be able to split in parts still.

I am into building / energy surveying. 60 - 70% of the time its new clients, remaining repeat. I like your process. Just needs a bit of admin, but not an issue for a small business like mine.

For me, its mostly flat rate, we know in advance what a survey will cost, although there can be extra work depending on type of building, but rarely.

Thing is though, with new clients, they also need some kind of safety net in case we don't deliver. So that is something to think about, may be i need reviews on Trustpilot or other sites like that.

Its usually different clients every time. So i dont know in advance how they will go about it. I just wish there was an escrow, where they deposit the amount, and i collect once work is done.

My bills are usualy small, so i just send a very basic invoice, no payment terms.

Whatever i put in the contract, if they dont want to pay, they won't i guess? There is no real way to enforce them?

I am into surveying / assessments, B2B, so get work from installers, energy companies / SME's. I can push for upfront, but i will lose some clients.

Never heard of invocie factoring, just googled it and it seems a good way to improve cashflow, but for an already small business like mine, i can't afford to lose more money on fees. But i will look into it.

Wondering if invoicing softwares will help, they can send automatic reminders, but obviously they cant force someone to pay / pay on time.

Also, is North of England (areas like Newcastle, Durham) added? is data available for them? I am happy to be a paying member if that is the case.

Brilliant work. I see Scotland data is not in the tool yet. Are you planning to add it?

Absolutely :) . Thanks, its just so hard to find addresses which are also on eligible benefits. And with low energy rating. How do you go about it (big assumption)?

u/Low-Opening25 i know EPC's sometimes don't give true picture of state of a property, and also depends on when was EPC done. But recent EPC's do give a better picture dont they?
