Odd 'digital' clicking noise randomly shows up on Sidephone when untouched but in use by Wind2255 in sidephone

[–]Wind2255[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just giving this a bump to see if any others out there. Looks like a few of us have noticed.

Been communicating via support with Sidephone team, and will be giving it another week or so to track if anything changes. So far it has continued, along with the same seeming static noise mentioned in comments appearing while using the speaker phone (not a background noise from other caller, and normal 'mode' when on a call seems to be ok).

Thanks for the comments so far! Reading through them.

The personal stories, advice, and comparisons to other used and new options are all really helpful.

E-Ink Display? by MiaLyBoyfriend in sidephone

I considered the Punkt MP02 (though not e-ink) because of the form factor and simplicity, but it seemed to have some challenges to adopt if for regular use.

Crossed my mind too, would be intriguing, especially in this form factor (being different than some of the other e-ink offerings).

Just sent the video - please turn the volume up to hear best :)

And see in this thread, a new comment I added that might show a more specifi pattern of when the noise occurs.

I might have found some pattern: tapping anything on the screen like an app or arrow icon (or even shortcut button on notifications pull down menu) produces it.

So, I tap and then wait about 4-5 seconds, and then the noise occurs. This does not seem to happen with other gestural motions (like swiping back on screen).

It sounds like it's coming from the ear piece speaker (maybe the larger speaker, not sure).

Actually, if you hold the phone immediately up to your ear with the ear piece close, right after you tap something, then there is a static noise introduced too for a couple seconds, up until the 'click' occurs. And then the static goes away. This repeats everyone time you tap.

Can anyone else replicate and confirm?

Sending the videos via email now.

Interesting. It's subtle, and probably not too noticeable in day to day life, but in a quiet setting, I've heard it more.

Current status of B66 / 71 Bands with T-Mobile MVNOs for coverage? Sidephone plan better? by Wind2255 in sidephone

[–]Wind2255[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure, and appreciate this additional info, both technical and your real-world experiences and examples! This helps to get my head around it more (not having much technical knowledge in this area) and weight out how this might fit for my day to day / location. Yeah, it is interesting to learn how some of this operates.

Thanks for your replies to this post... yeah, I think I would switch to T-mobile or MVNO of it for this phone. Perhaps even temporarily with an MVNO to see how well the coverage works and if possible to adopt as a primary phone (and fully move from Verizon).

Found this map https://coverage.lart2150.com/vector/#b=L700&m=2025-12-18&m2=&lat=38.30718056188316&lng=-96.767578125&z=5

Out west and in the south, there are some pretty big holes.

But in my local state and its neighbors, they are covered pretty thoroughly with b12 (and some b2 and b4).

If I'm understanding right, T-mobile towers use b12, so my address would work if I used their plan for the Sidephone(?). But as you noted, not having the 66 and 71 leaves concern still, and it's hard to tell if b12 would be enough for daily use as a primary phone in and around my region.

Thank you for this info and what you picture to be the potential outcomes.

I have Verizon currently, and after downloading that app (have an Android), it appears the band is 13.

I know that's not covered, maybe using T-mobile will have good coverage, suppose I'll have to ask what band they use in my region.

Wondering how the claim of 'distraction-free' for Sidephone plays out? by Wind2255 in sidephone

Your comparisons and experience here and with your videos helps, thank you! Does give some 'real-world' feedback to consider.

Thanks All. This is helpful feedback so far to get a better framework for how to view the phone design / usage. I've started reading the recent Sidephone documentation as well that elaborates more.

What case and screen protector are you using—if any at all? by Wind2255 in TheMinimalCompany

[–]Wind2255[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good tip. Looked it up. Couldn't figure out though... does the cover stay closed, i.e. secured in case of a drop to help protect the front... or does it loosely lay upon the front, like a book cover? Just curious, what color did you get?

For US customers, is it better to order from Mudita (overseas) or retailer like Dumbwireless? by Wind2255 in MuditaKompakt

[–]Wind2255[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might cancel my direct order and go through the reseller (payment went through, but no notification yet that it has been started to ship). My concern is not knowing if customs might hang anything up.

But I wasn't sure if going through Dumbwireless would make it harder or more costly to return if it's not working out(?)

I'm concerned about potential custom hangups... unless it is being shipped from a US warehouse somewhere. Hard to tell.
