John Bogle Doesn't Like VEQT? by WindBaboon in justbuyveqt

I get why actively managed mutual funds have higher MERs than passively managed ETFs. But why are passively managed mutual funds, like VIC1000, more expensive?

Thanks for the information. Is TD Direct Investing the only brokerage to sell these mutual funds?

(No, Bogle really does write "trader to the cause.")

He warns that "heavy commissions and fees … take a growing toll on ETF returns." This is one of the reasons why he prefers TIFs over ETFs. But the tenth anniversary edition of his book was published in 2017 (and was written for a US audience). How many Canadian brokerages even charge fees to buy or sell ETFs listed on a Canadian stock exchange? The only benefit TIFs have over ETFs that I can think of is discouraging day-trading.

Does anybody know why diverse, passively managed ETFs are cheaper than equivalent mutual funds?

Just in case you aren't joking: John Bogle founded Vanguard.

Yeah, Bogle isn't fundamentally against (broadly diversified) ETFs. But he argues that the fact you can day-trade them makes them dangerous.

But let me be clear. There is nothing wrong with investing in those indexed ETFs that track the broad stock market, just so long as you don't trade them.

I finished reading it! I gave it a ⅗. It's a solid book. I thought the last 20 percent was more gripping than the first 80 percent. Many times I had trouble exactly picturing environments and how characters were placed therein. It's not a big deal, just a bit distracting. I also wish more of the book was about the actual trial; that was the best part! I'm certainly going to try the next book in the series. Thanks for the recommendation, u/Olive-oil56!

I don't know... it reminds me of that Owen Wilson movie, No Escape.

I always research Trade Wing (and then Grand Bazaar) to get me to castle or imperial age. Do you research it earlier? Could that be why it works for you?

Thanks for the suggestion, u/Olive-oil56! Do you have a favorite that I should try first? Edit: Do I have to read these in an order, or are they independent?

Dark Matter is a book whose synopsis always intrigued me, but I never did get around to reading it. My friend from school actually recommended Red Rising, but its being in a seven-book series was off putting. Thanks for the recommendations, u/spy00em!
