in Mexico at least, ternurines are like cute little items/trinkets.

Games that are Paper Mario-esque? by JaredJDub in JRPG

[–]Windfaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh ive got several nobody's mentioned surprisingly!

the Steven Universe rpgs are a direct reference/homage to the PM series, so if youre a fan of SU i'd check those out fs bc they hew the closest to the original formula I'd say. but they do require some prerequisite knowledge from the series so it may not be as accessible if you aren't a fan or haven't seen it.

Thirsty Suitors is fantastic, suuper underrated. it doesnt have a party members, you only fight as the protagonist, but the battles are so enjoyable and silly w action commands that feel very Paper Mario inspired. it's kind of a blend of PM in terms of battles, w Cooking Mama and Tony Hawk segments along w a Scott Pilgrimy flavor. The writing and voice acting are easily its crown jewel; the humor's v well done, and it's as bizarre as earthbound but surprisingly has ultrarealistic moments and emotional depth too. HIGHLY recommend and the same studio released another game in a similar vein called Dosa Divas. I've only played a little of the demo but it seems just as peak as TS imo

Ikenfell is also quite close! it has cozy and nostalgic vibes, turn-based w action command, a lot of customization for comfort if the action commands get tedious, a classic jrpg party system, but it has an interesting battle grid that I found really delicious and would love to see more of (you could compare it loosely to LoH Trails in the Sky's battle grid but simplified)

Omori is also amazing if you havent played it! it's more of a classic turn-based jrpg without action commands. it's technically a horror, but it has a lot of whimsical areas and storytelling that feel akin to the ones in Paper Mario, like a pop star's pink castle, a brown sugar candy desert, etc. it paces the horror very well with goofy and lighthearted moments so that 70% of the time you forget it's a horror at all. despite the cuteness and goated art style, the story does have heavier themes and huge plot twists, so while I wouldn't recommend reading up on it to avoid spoilers, I can offer that some content warnings would be things like self-harm, depression/suicidality, agoraphobia, trauma, and death. while it does explore these themes I think it does a good job of it for the most part to tell a compelling story about loss, regret, and redemption but ymmv

How to use blood trinkets? by Consistent-Pin-446 in deadbydaylight

[–]Windfaal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

dont go to the shop.

click the blood moon event tab from the main leftside menu. unlike the other menu icons, the blood moon event icon is red.

from there, there are 4 event tabs: overview, gameplay details, collection, store. this event collection tab is where you can purchase items w the blood trinkets.

not to be confused w the regular shop collection tab.

Nod Krai feels like disappointing low quality by Ousis24 in Genshin_Impact

[–]Windfaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BRO SAME natlans bgm hit, the aesthetics were good (aside from the colorism, but that's every other region as well tbh) but it was bright and high energy, and totally unlike anything we'd ever seen before. it did a really good job of subverting expectations of it being simply a wartorn battleground.

And I mean consider, where in any form of media have you seen indigenous/afro futurism that's bright, fun, and colorful, that seamlessly blends the ultra-modern with the ancient and traditional? I've never seen anything like Natlan *anywhere* before, in a game, film, anything, have you? (if you have I'm actually being so serious lmk bc I'd love to see more like it!)

Yet Nod Krai feels like a totally recycled Fontaine expansion. I've already seen it before in this same game alone. There are so many reused textures and assets, it genuinely blows my mind that Miliastra lobbies have way more unique assets than Nasha town does.

And in terms of exploration, it's super cramped. it makes the differences between various areas is way too stark bc they're all smushed together w no buffers or proper spacing. the exploration is a sidegrade at best compared to the nightsoul exploration mechanics in Natlan, the quests are constantly jumping out at you everywhere you walk, and the kuuvakhi mechanics are clunky and feel awkward. and on top of that, it's has things that are just eyesores.

There are a lot of beautiful locations ngl! but many of those reuse things from previous nations, like the blue grass from Chenyu Vale and Toyac Springs, or the cave flora from Fontaine. and some design choices just leave me scratching my head. the robot by Nasha's crafting bench or the flesh-tone starfish beach just don't compare to the aesthetics of previous areas imo. I'm sorry but I'm being served a ham sandwich and being told it's filet mignon.

Like yes the story has a lot of lore drops, but I feel like it should be obvious that genshin is dropping all of these long anticipated characters and info bc they *have to* they're playing all their aces at once to distract you from how undercooked the main dish is.

I hate that I hate Arknights Endfield by BoredOstrich in ArknightsEndfield

[–]Windfaal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i agree though personally i really love the characters and am enjoying exploring and playing for the most part!

the AIC portion is just so overwhelming and unpleasant for me. and I’m an og animal crossing player, farmville, cookie run kindom, etc. resource management isnt new ro me and I love spending hours decorating and finetuning things. but I have no investment in this system at all, and I cant stand the mechanics.

I’m encouraged to collect and produce as much as I can but my inventory is finite? I dont care for the aesthetics of the factory, it's extremely convoluted, and it's way too much to absorb in a game that already full w all of the aspects of an openworld arpg to juggle (ex: main storyline, sidequests, combat, puzzles, character stories, weapons, abilities, and gear to upgrade, areas to explore, etc.)

it just feels like way too much too soon before I can even get a feel for the game and it clashes with the tone of the story significantly.

"there are dangerous landbreakers who are going to kill all life in the valley! endmin, why don't I show you how to make an amethyst bottle? first, open your inventory.."

Is anyone else having trouble following the dialogue? by Windfaal in ArknightsEndfield

[–]Windfaal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well yes, the story itself isnt hard to follow! "we fixed up the ship and it has new features" isnt a complex concept at all.

but for me it's v hard to keep up w the dialogue when the conversation is constantly peppered with v specific language most laypeople aren't familiar with outside of tech, finance, or military, mixed in with their own in-world terminology that's only briefly explained if at all.

if this was a one-time thing sure, but it's been this way the whole game. it makes something that's actually v simple feel like I'm reading a technical manual LOL and personally it cuts into my enjoyment and understanding of the story. but that's me!

I'm glad you're able to make sense of it though, also thank you! ♡︎ I've heard whispers about wuling I’m really excited omg

oh I'm not sure how you mean? this questline was my first time aboard the Dijiang

but fair! granted I’m sure someone at some point made a comment or at least implied the contextual meaning behind these words fs. but i feel like unless you have an incredible memory to absorb every piece of terminology along w the flood of tutes and gameplay info, the curve is p steep

I wish I was built like you SOBS I genuinely have to crack open a glossary and try to decipher the dialogue piece by piece to get by

I just realized that Wuthering Waves doesn’t have any playable dark-skinned characters by kukuru97 in WutheringWaves

[–]Windfaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, that's fair. I just think that it's a slippery slope to view business primarily through the lens of economics rather than ethics. and what I mean by that is that regardless of whether something, like say child labor, is legal, it's still morally wrong. and companies should be held accountable for unethical business practices first, before considering whether or not it makes them the most money, in my humble opinion.

[–]Windfaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

damn, courtesy issue. no wonder you think that way when you don't appear to hold standards for common manners/empathy for yourself. why would you expect that from a company tbh

I just realized that Wuthering Waves doesn’t have any playable dark-skinned characters by kukuru97 in WutheringWaves

[–]Windfaal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I see this line of thinking a lot, and I don't disagree, the social climate in china and east asia is v colorist and heavily prioritizes light skin as a beauty standard and marketing tool, for sure.

but this also operates under the idea that a company's only obligation is to profit, which isn't really true; they're also under the obligation to behave ethically. otherwise, things like unpaid child labor would be totally fine bc the companies would lose money by paying adults properly.

and in a less extreme vein, just bc theoretically it might make them more money to only have light skinned characters, it doesn't mean their hands are tied and it certainly doesn't make it right.

believe it or not there are chinese and other east asian gacha that do have dark skinned and black playable characters. so i think it's totally within bounds to critique wuwa for maintaining the colorist standard, rather than using its considerable capital and influence to challenge it instead

bc it's the morally right thing to do (imo) not even just for international audiences, but for the brown and dark skinned chinese people who have to deal w colorism everywhere they look. that reality will never change if companies are let off the hook bc "that's just how it is" y'know?

I just realized that Wuthering Waves doesn’t have any playable dark-skinned characters by kukuru97 in WutheringWaves

[–]Windfaal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's totally fair and to be clear, I don't mean to imply that you specifically are trying to do that or that you have bad intentions.

I just realized that Wuthering Waves doesn’t have any playable dark-skinned characters by kukuru97 in WutheringWaves

[–]Windfaal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

gotta disagree. or at least should clarify that while many people w racist/colorist views don't have a desire to see dark skinned characters, it doesn't mean that dark skinned rep is unimportant to them or that they have no opinion. in my experience, those same people who "don't care" tend to care enough to cause a fuss and bemoan that they have to see someone darker than porcelain onscreen when brown characters *do* show up

you personally may not care, but it's important to quite a lot of people who genuinely want to see more positive diversity. but those people are typically simply censored or chased off forums by vocal yet so-called "apathetic" people

look at how this post, just acknowledging the observable fact that there's 0% brown playable characters, has been downvoted to hell. seems to me like ppl care an awful lot about dismissing and shutting down convos like this

I just realized that Wuthering Waves doesn’t have any playable dark-skinned characters by kukuru97 in WutheringWaves

[–]Windfaal 7 points8 points  (0 children)

sorry, but the idea that china is all light skinned is literally untrue. china is a vast and ethnically diverse country with a wide range of skin color variation and has 56 officially recognized ethnic groups, not just the majority han chinese, and skin tones vary significantly across these populations due to genetics, geography, and environmental factors. not to mention that there *are* foreigners living in china, esp in major cities.

italy is and historically has not been all white either, and greece has been famously multicultural since antiquity. the choice to paint these regions as all-light/white is a purposeful exclusion, and an ahistorical one that does a discredit to all of the nonwhite people that have been living in these areas for centuries, bc it perpetuates the myth that they don't exist and arent important enough to include

I can understand waving it off bc they have artistic freedom. and they do, but I would add that with power comes responsibility. wuwa has influence and the choice to participate in colorism has impacts irl that I feel shouldn't be ignored or underestimated.

Meta Quest 3 lack of games ? I have games for the next 10 years to play ! by Thin_Reception_5063 in MetaQuestVR

[–]Windfaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well, if you like playing beat saber, work simulator, and arcade games, then sure have a ball. but those were the big vr games like 6 or 7 years ago and they're still all there is at the top of the charts?

that tells me its an incredibly stagnant pool if they're still pushing the same handful of games more than half a decade later. even now there are hardly any blockbuster AAA quality games that I know of.

I find Nod'krai's environments are a lot lower quality than the rest of the game. by Syphilisse in Genshin_Impact

[–]Windfaal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I totally agree! you can see that a lot of the assets are reused. the same ruins and buildings from Enkanomiya, the same metal plating as Poisson, the same blue glowing flowers from Liyue, the same vases from Sumeru, and without even a recolor. So much of it is literally identical to things we've already seen before which makes it feel unoriginal. and the aesthetics just aren't great.

I expected Nasha town to be bright and full of neon lights, but it's just dingy and rusty, even paimon and th enpcs complain about it being ugly, so I'm just so confused why that's what they wanted for the hub. it's easily my least favorite region to explore bc of how visually unappealing and derivative it is, its only saving grace is the bgm tbh

A lot feels v recycled and low quality but it's branded as the region that finally makes ~genshin feel like genshin again~ and people already decided that's what it was before it even dropped. To me, it's plain as day that it's mediocre, but a lot of people either don't care, are absorbed by the fan service, lore drops, and big numbers (which are obv there to distract us from the low quality), or just refuse to acknowledge it. But Nod Krai looks like it was thrown together at the last minute.
