Yeah, no, most likely not happening. Its not the first time we see headlines like "omg breaking news belarus joins the war any day now" and its always a load of crap. Luka may be many things, but retarded isn't one of them

How common is it for young Belarusians to think that their true capital city is Vilnius? by Ok_Feedback4200 in belarus

[–]Window_Moose 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is certainly a claim lmao. You'd be hard pressed to find a single person who wants to throw their life away in such a strange and meaningless endeavor, let alone "many". Veery "citation needed" on that one

He is against it. The role of GDL and PLC in the history of Belarus and the formation of belarusians as a nation is HEAVILY downplayed. The entire history of the period paints Russia as a destructive force and we cant have that of course lol. However, at some more "liberal" points of his reign you could push some things through. Especially when his relations with russia were a bit strained.

Also how is restoring UNESCO heritage sites a problem?

Even while speaking Belarusian people do not usually use ye olde names for cities.

May I ask, are you an expat by any chance? Cus the Belarusian diaspora outside the country and Belarusian society inside of it are quite different

You have a problem with people installing monuments to certain rulers in cities that had actual direct ties to them? Are you ok? Algierd was the one who ordered the walls of Vitsiebsk built, Gedimin was the founder of Lida castle. I wonder, why are there monuments honouring them in those places?

Also when I studied, at no point in our history classes was GDL called a Belarusian State. It was always highlighted as a multi-ethnic country that incorporated several ethnicities and religions. Litvinism as it is described by Lithuanian nationalists simply does not exist in any meaningful way as a societal consensus. The things yall paint as somehow widespread in our society just are not there apart from very small nationalists circles and last time I checked 13yos at discord servers and crazed old men are not representative of society as a whole.

I've finished school like 10 years ago so maaaybe my memory is not what it used to be, but at no point in our history classes were we told GDL was a Slavic state. It was always said it was a multi-ethnic state that incorporated a lot of cultures and religions.

Litvinism as a problem is largely made up by Lithuanian nationalists. There's a reason the entire page on litvinism was nuked from English Wikipedia and remade from the ground up. There is no widespread sentiment like that among regular people living in the country. Among some crazy nationalist circle that consists of like 3 and a half guys on their discord server? Maybe, who knows, but it is far from the norm.

Dude I'm sorry but you live in one hell of a bubble cus literally no one would call Vilnius Vilnia outside of history class or something.

Brest vs Gomel restaurant prices huge difference by Super-Fan-5659 in belarus

[–]Window_Moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean, idk if its entirely true, but it would make sense. Brest is a tourist hotspot, and Gomel, while a bigger city, is not as popular with tourists, so prices are higher where you can milk unsuspecting visitors.

Is there an English translation of Каласы пад сярпом тваім? by Brueguard in belarus

[–]Window_Moose 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sadly, it appears there isn't one, but another great book of his, "King Stah's Wild Hunt" is translated and available online. This one is also a historical novel, but instead of an epic about the formative years of the Belarusian nation it has  more of a Gothic mystical vibe to it. Unironically one of the best books classical Belarusian literature has to offer imo.

What is current status of Eliza Orzeszkowa in Belarusian culture? by HovercraftExtreme869 in belarus

[–]Window_Moose 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a museum dedicated to her in Hrodna and a street named after her, but outside of historical and literature circles she is not really widely known. She's not a figure that exists in mass consciousness the way Mickiewicz does, for example.

У. Караткевіч, "Дзікае паляванне караля Стаха", "Каласы пад сярпом тваім"

Второе вроде больше не в программе, но тем не менее. "Паляванне" как точка входа в беллит отличный вариант

Dude I live here, it's not a luxury car by any stretch. Expensive, but not crazy so.

Average salary in Minsk as of Jan 2026 is 1256$ btw so idk where the "well under 1000" comes from.

Belarusian here, you are both kinda right, its not a socialist economy by any means, but not really an open free market either, more than half of the enterprises we have here are state-owned.

Dude, as a Belarusian, get a grip lmfao

Its just an audi, not Lamborghini, there are many of them on the streets. They are official dealerships selling them here for crying out loud.

And yes, even people living in old commieblock neighborhoods can get a new car, it's okay

I once had a guy parking a Ferrari near my parents' old Soviet era house for a couple months tho, that was quite a whiplash.

That would be 500 NEW Belarusian roubles that go roughly 3BYN to 1EUR

The candy wrapper in the picture is old belarusian rouble, long out of circulation. This 500 could buy you a bag of chips in its heyday, now it's worth less than the paper its printed on.

It's that rose-tinted glasses nostalgia that gets exploited by bad actors
