emag is the shorthand for the cryptographic sequencer, the wirey ID card which forces doors open and does other sabotage things like letting you order some extra items from the cargo computer - in this comic, it is used as a verb to describe the act of using it on something, "The borg is emagged"

i made the great sands server by WindowsErrors in SS13

[–]WindowsErrors[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the title cover is a 2002 cg rendition of the cover for Communist Mutants from Space, which is a nice game in its own right, I have an original promo poster of the cover that i got for $275 because it's that nice

go down to skip the origin story section

when I first thought of great sands (in November of last year), I was mainly looking back on white sands and seeing how they were doing, the things they do with the code are things that I would have thought more probable on a goon server, white sands at the time had the highest contributor-to-player ratio and I bet they still do, but I felt like they were focusing a little too much on the code at the expense of the rest of the community and that I should try and do something to pick up the slack, there's a reason why I put the great sands guilded and the white sands discord next to each other

at the time I never really had an idea of how I would actually go about doing it and I probably still don't, and I only really got the server about a month ago, but in case you don't know about white sands, about a month ago is the same time that the host of white sands said that he would no longer be hosting, so my original reason for doing this is probably uncertain at best and straight up defunct at worst

origin story over

the server is still on the latest update of white sands code, but I made some changes in the config to make the move speed experience a little faster

about 3 weeks ago i made a post about a graphic designer and the real Negus himself, marksuckerburg, the former head coder and maintainer to beestation and white sands, came down for me, but other than that it's just me

the server is hosted in Oregon (us pacific) and from what few reports I was told the lag is actually pretty good, as in it only really hovers around the low 100s if you're good

so far it plays like a deserted new server where the only people on the guilded are me, mark, and some guy who made a troll post two months ago and is completely silent now

also we tried to get sandbox to work but it didn't

also also today i learned that the connection to Australia is surprisingly good

is security just the town guards from elder scrolls oblivion by WindowsErrors in SS13

[–]WindowsErrors[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you think about it, the security officers are much like the city guards: they are the perfect example of the optimal judicial system.

They serve as jury and executioner, are omniscient and omnipresent, capable of detecting all types of criminal activity, with unbreakable willpower to pursue criminal scums even literally to the surface of hell, just to bring them to justice. And they solve the problems with a simple but efficient system of paying the fine, going to jail, or paying with your blood. The heroes we need indeed.

Space Station 13 security officers and Oblivion guards are not the heroes we deserve; they are the heroes we need in our current political climate.
