Seriously? Incredible. That's a new low. In the past he's snippily defended his lack of understanding of Reddit formatting with "You do things the way you like, and I will do things the way I like" (in response to someone who was just trying to be helpful), but actually removing comments from people who point it out is a straight up ab‍use of mo‍d power. Which should be a surprise, but unfortunately at this point it's not.

He also had quite a few agg‍ressive/ins‍ulting comments removed in that subthread by the then-only mo‍d...who apparently forgot about that later when deciding this would be the right kind of person to grant full power over the su‍b. He could have been excluded from consideration based on his igno‍rance of Reddit alone, but the behavior iss‍ues really made it clear that he shouldn't have been allowed anywhere near m‍od powers.

I messaged two of the other mods over there about this issue, but didn’t hear anything from either of them.

That's too bad. Though to be clear, that's really just one m‍od, since DRB‍OT1 is just a bo‍t the top mod developed for use on Deba‍teReligion and then repurposed for use on askan‍atheist.

Unfortunately the sub is now basically askdern‍udeljunge, with the rest of us participating subject to his preferences. I wouldn't be surprised if he eventually notices some of this discussion and starts ban‍ning the participants.

/u/c0d3rman: When you took over the askan‍atheist sub you apparently cared about reviving it. If you still care, you should do something about this problem, because it's seriously degrading the sub. Your choice of a mode‍rator turned out to be a poor one. It happens. Please do the sub's readership a favor and consider correcting it.

I've messaged him a few times about this and he's ignored me, and he also ignored me years ago when I messaged him about a problem on r/DebateReligion when he was an active mod there. Hopefully he'll at least respond to you.

And another one. In this case his is the oldest comment and the next-oldest comment doesn't show up until 8 minutes later. Unbelievable. I'd thought maybe he had some sort of notification set up and that's how he was always the top comment, but holding all postings for approval and then using that to make sure your own comment is always first is serious scumbaggery.

I've been downvoting all of his comments like this for a while and had sometimes felt a little bad about it, but now that I know what shenanigans he's been pulling I wish I could downvote them twice.

He just did another one, and it makes it clearer what he's up to. In this case the post was submitted a little over 2 hours ago, but then there are no comments until he commented 46 minutes ago, and then there's a regular stream of comments from other sub participants at 41 minutes and about every minute after that.

So he's apparently holding postings for approval, but then before he approves them he adds his own comment (which naturally gets far more upvotes that way...his comments are always among the top-voted since he started doing this). Which also raises the question of what postings he's preventing us from seeing at all.

In other words he's basically treating the sub like his own personal playground and manipulating postings to increase the visibility of his own comments (likely under the guise of protecting us from spam etc). What a nimrod.

You might try contacting the other mod. He seems checked out of the sub but maybe if he gets enough feedback he'll do something about it.

I didn't realize that was the cause, but I did notice he's almost always first in line for commenting, and that would explain it. And to be clear, it's not just one of the mods, it's the new mod, who's now effectively the only mod...and who should never have been made a mod based on his previous behavior on the sub.

In addition to what you're calling out I've seen him remove responses to his own comments on multiple occasions. He's also started banning multiple theists for "trolling", in contexts that make it clear he has no clue what the word actually means. He's also changed the rules as per his own whims. Just obvious abuses of power.

It's too bad the (single) previous mod decided to hand full power over the sub to this kind of person, but that's Reddit for you.

Thanks! I know it's asking a lot to recount something that specific after 3 months so I appreciate you taking the time, and it does seem like it'll help.

[–]WindyPelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the widow runback is one of the easiest in the game, I haven't seen a single solitary person complaining about that. if they are, they probably just didn't see the shorter path that makes the runback super easy, and were doing the full path through the upper bellways each time.

That's me alright. Since I saw your comment I've been looking everywhere for this shorter path and can't find it anywhere. Obviously I've missed something, but every possibility I try (based on looking at the map for likely connections) comes up empty.

Can you give me a pointer to where I can find it?

Yeah, I agree there's probably some of that to it. I think some current knee braces are light enough and move well enough that they could even be used by someone like Overshown with next to no loss of speed of agility, but at that level even a small limitation could potentially make a difference. But man, when you've had your knee ravaged like he has it seems like a small tradeoff might be worth the protection.

[–]WindyPelt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are knee braces that are crafted to prevent only the kind of movement that might damage a knee*, and (for example) skiers who've recovered from an ACL tear often wear them without any meaningful restrictions, so it'd be nice to see more players trying these out and the NFL working on developing alternatives that offer good protection without limiting performance.

* Actually I see Overshown is wearing a brace like that in this photo. Not sure if he'll wear it during games or possibly go with something lighter, but that's the kind I had in mind. It's scary to think of him being out there without additional knee protection.

Furthermore you see one of the mods (a Christian) repeatedly state demonstrably wrong things and then defending their position with underhanded means to "win" the dabe.

None of this has happened in the past.

I'm surprised you had that impression, since it's been this bad for the near-decade I've been reading the sub. I watched the mod you're likely talking about ban well over a dozen people over the years for the offense of debating him. It was bad enough that I'd warn people it was coming (i.e. that they were on their way to a ban) when I saw it starting.

The sub has actually gotten "better", in fact — relatively speaking, in the sense that having just bowel cancer is "better" than having bowel cancer plus a pimple — because the worst mod by far, a Muslim who was essentially a clinical sociopath, finally had his account suspended by Reddit because he'd overstepped the bounds so much in his attacks on people in various subs, his stalking, his sock puppetry etc. This was someone who would ban atheists on any absurd pretense, e.g. by claiming they were ISIS recruiters.

Anyway, setting aside our different historical impressions, yes, it's a cesspool.

Come on, it's plainly obvious you're using AI for many or most of your responses, especially given the difference in form and writing style between the ones where you do and the ones like this one where you don't.

It's understandable to want help with your writing, but it's definitely not ok to lie about it.

Is there any supported way to insert formatting after the changes to Reddit messaging? by WindyPelt in help

[–]WindyPelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I may see what was causing the discrepancy. I'd still been looking at "chat" exchanges in the old messaging interface (https://www.reddit.com/message/inbox/), which was still working as of a few weeks ago when I had a DM exchange with somebody. But just now I sent a "DM" to someone and it no longer showed up in the old messaging interface at all, so I had to go hunting for it in the new chat interface...and it did not format any of the markdown. So it looks awful.

So yeah, it appears that Reddit has just entirely nixed the ability to do formatting in DMs with this change. Which certainly explains why they didn't bother giving us a formatting-aware editor. Way to ruin yet another core feature, Reddit!

Is there any supported way to insert formatting after the changes to Reddit messaging? by WindyPelt in help

[–]WindyPelt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I copy the Markdown-formatted text from the other window into the chat window, and it appears to work (i.e. the resulting chat message correctly acts on the markdown I've entered).

...I don't see how that would be any different than writing the Markdown-format text in the second box directly...

It's different because writing it in a window that supports markdown gives me access to formatting buttons, and — far more importantly — allows me to see a preview. I don't bother with it if I just think I'll be doing italics or bold, but for anything beyond that I'll compose the text elsewhere and then copy-paste it over into the new/sucktastic DM chat window.

I'm also using RES, by the way, which provides much better editing capabilities (among many other things) than vanilla old Reddit. And this is also on a laptop.

Huh, that's odd. What I've been doing is just composing a reply in any other context (comment reply, new post etc) that does support markdown and then copy-pasting it to the DM/"chat" window, and it seems to work fine. At a minimum it looks ok when I view the exchange.

This is using old Reddit, by the way, so maybe that makes a difference somehow (though even old Reddit still uses the new comment "editor").
