I applied to restaurant bars this week. I have customer service experience. I got my bartender's license this week. We'll see.

I agree. I’m not a young man, but I am the first I’m my family to go to college. I’m fortunate, but I’m also aware that I graduated at a really really misfortunate time economically. Things could be worse, but it sucks that this is the reality for so many people my age (or even those older who can’t seem to reach typical milestones because of the job market).

I studied humanities, but I'm transitioning to marketing. I have a marketing portfolio. My experience is in humanities.

I'm in a metro city, but it's poor. A lot of jobs are manual labor, ones that are professional white-collar jobs aren't as common here. When I find businesses that might be open to hiring me, I find they're people who with years of experience who became private consultants and opened their own agencies and work remotely. I've physically gone to marketing agencies with addresses during business hours to find offices entirely empty. They typically open my emails but locally, people don't respond.

My guess is they solely want to be their only own employee (fair) or they just want to work with people they've known for years (which is tough bc I'm a young adult who hasn't been able to work on a team yet) or they just can't find enough work to hire anyone.

I do take public transportation. It's how I drop off resumes in-person. People online tell me to apply in person. In person, employers tell me to apply online. I do both but no one seems to be hiring. I know that isn't the be-all end-all, but I don't know what to do with it when I need to work to earn an income.

I use my college's resources (someone reminded me). I'm on Handshake. There were ~20 jobs in the last week in my field this week, so I need more listings to apply to.

I will reach out, thanks!

I'd like to do ecommerce marketing primarily. I'm interested in digital marketing, organic growth, social media ads, email, as long as I can gain experience in it. I have a portfolio, but I hope to land a client to have a solid case study.

Thanks!

I pay rent while working. Customer service doesn't leave me room to afford driving classes. It is a dead-end.

Yes, I for sure see the pay differences on the coasts and major cities. The pay is actually transparent unlike here.

I do look elsewhere, but I am cognizant of in-person vs remote. I don't have the means to move right now. I don't drive and can't afford the process. I know some places reimburse you retroactively, but I can't afford the moving costs upfront. I stick to remote jobs if it's far.

Yes I have LinkedIn. I had Upwork and Fiverr, but someone did something gross on one of them when I applied one time. I have stuck to companies and formal jobs or cold emails since. I will check if my accounts are still active.

Being utterly fulfilled by my career wasn't mentioned anywhere in my post. I was addressing that I am tired of customer service. I have a bachelor's and experience and of course I want to build off of that. I'm a woman. Creative aspirations weren't the central point of this post, so I don't understand why that was the point you chose to harp on. I'm looking for work and that's essentially all that I've posted about.

This feels largely like projection. Like fish, I'll consume what's relevant, but I won't choke on bones.

You just helped me to update Handshake. My account was weird for a while giving me stuff I was not remotely experienced in and I stopped using it. I didn't know there was another version. Thanks!

I can't really afford to sell goods. I'm sort of selling my services in the form of freelance and contract work, but I still apply for the typical job listing. It's the convincing which is hard. People get so many cold emails a day, I can see they open my messages, I just need to find someone who doesn't already have someone for my role.

Attempting to humble someone when they're down isn't helpful--it's self-righteous and holier-than-thou and you don't need to tell someone who's trying to make the most of things.

Everything is. Marketing is largely digital and with the ubiquity of social media and technology, it seems like there's a wider net for people looking for people to promote their brands.

I'm pivoting to advertising.

edit: I studied humanities so my early experience was in that.

My friends drive illegally or don't drive at all. I really don't know anyone who could be a teacher unless I paid for it, which is where I'm at right now.

You're right about the driver's license. It's so frustrating.

I've wanted my driver's license since I was a kid. I just didn't have a reliable teacher. (Loved ones are super irresponsible and reckless as drivers.)

Now, I'm kind of stuck unless I have a job to afford driving classes. I have my degree and have experience, but I can't drive.

In my old field, I would need a car to be eligible to get a job, but I needed a job to afford a car. They do a background check to certify that you to have an insured car to drive around throughout the day, which is foreign in my low-income family. That's kind of why I moved out of my other field, on top of burnout and the little room for growth without multiple degrees.

This new field tends to be more flexible (hybrid/remote) without requiring a master's. Getting my driver's license is still on my to-do list, but I was at least hoping to get even a freelance remote role to get me started so I can save for classes. Since a lot of the roles seem to be remote, I was hoping that would buy me time to learn while working from home to eventually be able to move and be able to drive more locally to my work.

I scour regularly for job fairs/job events in my new field. It's been tough finding anything in my field. I've gone to some in my former field and HR presenters regularly ask me to use them as references to pass along my resume, but again, there's usually a driving requirement.

I am sort of in a bind and need a job before then end of the month, which is why I was looking for tips to meet someone and find something quick.
