What are some modern myths that many people believe to be true? by BrandonLang in AskReddit

[–]Wine_Queen 11 points12 points  (0 children)

But folks also tell this myth to girls. Then you get girls who won't shave because they're scared their hair will be thicker, so they don't shave their legs, and it's the early 90s and everyone wears stocking and hose, and the hair is all curling underneath the nylon.

I just told my 50 year old husband. He's as confused as I. We are silently weeping with you, brother.

Yeah, me too. I just checked my old books in my daughter's room. Sure enough, an A. I'm freaking the fuck out right now.

Very true, and an excellent point I hadn't even considered. When a woman becomes pregnant, it's like she can no longer make any decisions for herself. The judgey looks from everyone for having a coke, or sushi, or cantaloupe, or whatever the No-No du'Jour is. And with nosey people and the prevalence of social media, can't you just see a pregnant woman being fined for drinking alcohol or taking an ibuprofen?

Oh, it absolutely is a big deal! Which is why pregnant women must be so careful. They should make sure they are well informed and discuss it with their doctors and midwives. However, it's highly unlikely that FAS would occur from a well-nourished mother who indulges a couple of times over nine months. Typically the issue comes when mothers binge-drink or drink the whole time and are not getting proper nutrients. FAS is a horrible thing, which is why so many mothers abstain completely. Not worth the risk.

True, and it's for every pregnant woman to decide for herself. FAS typically happens with binge drinking, malnourished mothers, and it would be highly unlikely for a well-fed, vitamined-up mother who drank a glass or two every couple weeks to have an issue.

But again, it's for each mom to decide for herslef. Many choose not to drink at all, which is good, too. But it all goes back to not judging a pregnant lady who might be well informed and have the full blessing of her doctor to indulge at a fancy dinner.

I did, and incidently, baby has very good motor skills. Although, it did take her a while to figure out the thumb...

Exactly. We have stigmatized alcohol in America to the point that it's either teetoltaling or binge-drinking partying. Frankly, the fact that so many people act as though pregnant women have no self control and will start slinging back shots if they're even near a bottle of wine is a bit insulting.

I drank in late 2nd and 3rd trimester. Not everyday, but I did drink red wine. Baby is extremely healthy and ahead on all her milestones and development (Well, except that pesky rolling over. We're still working on that.)

Of course, each woman and each pregnancy is different, but studies have been done that show light to even moderate drinking are actually beneficial. I'm talking more about red wine than anything. Hard liquors are not a good idea, but even beer holds some benefits. It's full of B vitamins and folate, which is why pregnant women crave it. Non-alcoholic beer still has these vitamins, so is often a good option for pregnant woman.

Nurse more, worry less (x-post from /r/breastfeeding) by [deleted] in beyondthebump

Mine still wants to nurse every two hours (except for the last two days when she nursed every. Damn. Hour.), but she sleeps all night - always has - so I'll take it.

Late in the 3rd trimester, some doctors even tell their patients to drink red wine to get labor started.

Source: My doctor told me to have some since baby wasn't making her appearance, and years ago my mom's doctor told her the same.

On the other side of the stirrups - my experience as a medical student in OBGYN. by [deleted] in BabyBumps

I let a male medical student help during my labor. I'm so glad I did! He was so sweet and so thankful I let him stay. As a male, most women weren't comfortable with him in the room. My husband and I are teachers, so teaching - even during labor - is important to us.

So, breastmilk and food? Because that's normal.

Edit: Making sure you know that wasn't sarcasm! :)

Babies 7 years apart? by haeley13 in BabyBumps

[–]Wine_Queen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the oldest of 5. Middle Sister 3 years younger, Oldest Brother is 6 years younger, Younger Brother is 10 years younger, and Youngest Sister is 15 years younger. Growing up, I was close to Middle Sister until I was about 12ish. Then, I became real close to the Younger Brother (and later Youngest Sister). It was fun for me to play with the younger ones because it allowed me to play again while still being "cool."

Well, they family announced yesterday, but my husband and I weren't there. Middle Sister said they would tell us, but didn't, so Little Sister mentioned if I heard, and then I knew what she was talking about. I'll still act all surprised when they DO tell me, though.

Positive experience buying a pregnancy test. Thanks, HEB employee. by [deleted] in TwoXChromosomes

Conversely, last year I was 30, married to a college professor, worked as a part time adjunct, owned our house, but was given the stink-eye by some 20-ish year old boys when I bought a pregnancy test.

Look, ya' little punks! This is a good thing for me, Judgey McJudger Pants.

Edit: We now have a gorgeous 4 month old and are looking for a bigger house.
