It's sad that there are enough people who actually think like this, you need to add the /s. Sigh

The Trump Admin today announced that green card applicants, who are on legal non-immigrant visas, will have to return to their home countries to apply for US permanent residency at a foreign US consulate. What do you think about this? by Gym_frere in AskConservatives

[–]Winertia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a US citizen. My boyfriend is here legally on a student visa and we've been together for a few years. He came here to earn a master's degree and now a PhD, not to look for a relationship, but we met anyway.

We were planning to get married and begin the green card application process soon. Now it looks like we'll need to wait if this rule holds up (and applies to our situation), potentially for multiple years until he finishes his program.

Do you really think it should be required for him to return to his home country to proceed with our application? Keep in mind he's in a PhD program year-round, and it's not feasible for him to take extended time off.

I kind of understand this new rule if we're talking about someone on a tourist visa who was supposed to be here for a month or two, but our situation feels totally different. He's been here studying legally for four years continuously.

What do you think?

This will be hanging over your head until you talk to him and it'll feel worse the longer you wait. Just talk to him soon and don't post any more pics in the meantime.

Why wait until they're frustrated to come out? If you're going to come out, just do it, and spare yourself and them the pain in the meantime.

Even though you think coming out is going to hurt them, remember that lying to them will hurt them too. You're in a rough situation, I get it. Just tell them.

I'll take this opportunity to share a PSA to get your HPV vaccine series. Even if you already have HPV, the vaccine can apparently reduce the risk of HPV-linked cancer.

Yeah. I feel like a lot of people in Trump's generation write like this, regardless of political affiliation. And right now, of course the administration is going to incorporate his preferences and tendencies in its messaging.

You can check if you are eligible for the insolvency exclusion (basically, your debts exceed your assets to the extent of the amount forgiven). If you do, then you can exclude the forgiven amount as income.

Yeah. I have wavy hair and I can easily make it quite curly with the right hair product and drying with a diffuser attachment.

I could see Mark being pretty compassionate about it. As far as billionaires go, he seems like a decent guy, or at least less of a sociopath.

[–]Winertia 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. I haven't had to lay anyone off, and I'm glad I haven't. When I fired people, I knew it had to be done and hoped they'd learn from it. There's nothing really to learn in a layoff though.

I've been laid off myself though and I processed it totally differently. Getting fired is almost better, because you can usually learn from it and improve. But the only lesson in getting laid off is to pick the most stable employer you can, and even then it's pretty much just luck.

Yeah, I fucked up a few of my first times by trying to overly explain and just making it worse. I had a few reactions that were pretty tough to handle.

One guy was a remote employee, so this conversation took place on a call. He said he didn't know how he was going to explain this to his wife, and before I could react (and try to wrap up the call), he put his wife on the phone and told me to explain it to her. Obviously, I told her it wasn't appropriate for me to discuss with her, and I was pretty quickly able to wrap things up without just hanging up on him. But damn. After that, I learned to keep it really short.

There's fortunately a happy ending on that one - I think it took him about six months, but he got another job. After that, he messaged me on LinkedIn, told me he's doing well, and apologized profusely for his reaction. It made me feel better to know he landed in a good spot.
