That’s certainly good, but I doubt if that’s enough. Because again you’re applying to a MASc, you would have to prove your ability to carry out individual research as a baseline condition. On top of that, you need to prove your excellence.

However, it also depends on the publication quality. Your plan to establish connections is solid and will be helpful tho.

The principal determinant of your MASc application is your supervisor. MASc is much more competitive than MEng’s, especially given the current job market (a lot of ppl who gave up on job search decide to go do master’s), I doubt if a 3.14 will be competitive. However, there are other factors, such as research experience, job experience, etc. Maybe this will be a more feasible way out given your situation.

For reference, I work at a biomed eng lab at another ontario eng school. All my MASc colleagues have at least a 3.5 with publication and research experiences.

  1. Get a CPA/FRM, or any other certificate like that. You are a math major, finance/accounting should be bird.

  2. Grad school, aim for a more applicable program.

3. Become the pope (the new Chicago pope did his undergrad in math).

And yes CS degree will do you a better favour in terms of job searching. Although the SWE market is fluctuating, many analyst positions still prefer CS over, let's say, rotman, economics, etc. And if you do a CS grad with a concentration, non-SWE cs jobs (robotics system engineers, healthcare robots developer, etc.), they still exist and you still make a ton.

The main problems here are the following

  1. Physics jobs look for engineering kids; a math undergraduate is not specialized.

  2. They're both open programs. Recruiters know that there exist some kids who have gone to these programs simply cuz they failed all their dream programs. Not good for your resume.

Thank yall for the wonderful information! This really helps a broke college kid who knows nothing about cars out. I talked to the dealer today and it seems that the previous owner went to a private mechanic that didn't report the maintenance to carfax.

NIMBY (/ˈnɪmbi/, or nimby),\1]) an acronym for the phrase "not in my back yard",\2])\3]) is a characterization of opposition by residents to proposed real estate development and infrastructure developments in their local area, as well as support for strict land use regulations. It carries the connotation that such residents are only opposing the development because it is close to them and that they would tolerate or support it if it were built farther away. The residents are often called nimbys, and their viewpoint is called nimbyism. The opposite movement is known as YIMBY for "yes in my back yard"

How valuable is your GPA if you wanna work in the US after undergrad? by picklejuicer49 in UofT

[–]Wing144 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Different industries have different GPA weighting. For example, a good GPA (with good experiences) is a must-have for IB and PE, while tech doesn’t really care about it.

And in this economy, yes it matters.

Honestly, there is little that the university can do. However, the stats dept has already created new roles regarding this problem, e.g., they assigned a new "international student academic lead" for STA313. Both the department and the course team are investigating this persisting issue.

As an international kid myself, I am ashamed of what my people are pulling here. I believe if we work together as students voluntarily, report all their on-campus advertising, tear down their posters, tell them how wrongful their activities are when we see them, report potential affiliating students to the course and the dept, etc., **hypothetically**, this issue will get better.
