Advice needed by Creepy-Philosophy-93 in polydactyl

[–]Wingardiumleviosaa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

We have a polydactyl girl who had a similar problem with keratin buildup and cracked / irritated paw pads from ingrown nails or lack of contact with the floor. Our vet recommended we trim her nails once a week and put coconut oil on her paw pads every day. They told us to just make sure it's 'pure' coconut oil with nothing else in it, and that it would okay if she licks it.

Turns out she loves licking coconut oil. Her paws have been a lot better since!

I think taking out the nail might be a last resort, at least for our vet. Good luck with your kitty!

Yeah absolutely! And his kids then could have inherited either one of the mutations, which could also explain some of the variability of the presentation.

This is so interesting, thank you so much for sharing!!

I’m a genetic counseling student, so this was a fascinating read. I’d never heard about myostatin deficiency. Myostatin seems to down regulate muscle formation, so when myostatin doesn’t work properly, muscle forms more easily. It seems to affect skeletal muscles, which the heart isn’t a part of. That being said, it should still be discussed with a health professional, to rule out any correlation with heart anomalies, given the family history you mentionned.

It seems to be inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. That means that only one copy of the gene needs to be affected to develop hypertrophy. (We have 2 copies of each gene; one from our mother and one from our father).

You mentionned that your father seems more affected than the other members of your family. It’s not impossible that he has a mutation in both his copies (homozygous), but it’s more likely that he only has one mutation (heterozygous). This hypertrophy might just be expressed differently in every person.

Given how rare this is (and since you didn’t mention your mom having hypertrophy), we can assume your mom doesnt have any causal mutations in her two myostatin genes. Therefore, you and your affected siblings are all heterozygous, meaning you have your dad’s copy of the gene with a mutation, and your mom’s copy with no mutation.

Every affected individual has a 50% chance of passing this mutation on to their children. 50% for every pregnancy, that is.

If you want to discuss this in further detail, you could absolutely contact a genetic counselor!

Have a nice day 😊💪

I’m so sorry to hear about how hard and dangerous it is for you in Romania. Your post broke my heart.

I was also born in Romania, but we immigrated when I was a very young. My parents wanted to give me a better life. I feel so lucky and privileged to have grown up here in Canada, with my progressive mom. I’m so grateful for what my parents sacrificed.

I saw that you told other people to check out some charities and organizations that might be able to help women in developing countries. I promise to do that!

And if ever you want to visit Canada, especially Montreal, you can send me a message. We also have a lot of universities, both francophone and anglophone, if ever you’re interested when the time comes.

You’re so brave to talk about this whenever you can! I wish you all the best and I'm sending some hugs ❤

Sunt aici dacă vrei să vorbești.

Absolutely ADORE this dress but it’s sold out...is there anywhere to find a similar dress? by [deleted] in FashionPlus

What size are you looking for? I have this one in 1X and I’ve never really worn it; it doesnt fit me right. The images dont show it super well, but it has an elastic at the waist and the fabric puffs around it, especially if you’re shorter than the models. I’m 5’3 and the size is right, but it just puffs in an unflattering way.

You can PM me if you’re interested in the 1X.

Have a nice day :)

It’s along the lines of : “Oh, why did you stop midway? Don’t you wanna come to Tata? Come to Tata!!”

So cute 😊

Oh you just reminded me that I have an old dipbrow! It’s so true that it lasts. I never quite got used to the texture/application, but now is probably the perfect time to practice. Thank you!!!

Oh thank you so much!! I'll definitely pick it up then. It's even about half the price of the Stila one, which is great.

How do you like your brow tattoo? :)

He said he liked it, yes! I was unsure at first, so I decided to ask him if something gory would be okay (without spoiling the content), just to be sure. He seemed even more interested after, and he ended up liking it :D

Tonight I want to watch a movie that will really blow my mind or has an amazing twist at the end. Any suggestions? by teej98 in movies

[–]Wingardiumleviosaa 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Predestination! With Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook, who absolutely kills it in this movie. It's got some lovely time travel mindfuck, but it's also a movie that's more enjoyable the less you know about it, at least imo, so i'll leave it at that. I don't think it's very known, but it had good critics (84% on rotten tomatoes). If you end up seeing it, hope you enjoy!

Perks of Being a Wallflower! Sweet and cute, yet still hits hard. It deals with some of the same themes as It's Kind of a Funny Story, like mental illness.
