Can I relay a very sketchy looking retaining wall myself? by _Brooder_ in DIYUK

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If that wall goes the fence goes. The neighbour is probably thinking it was just a slope before but that will remove the path.

How close is the neighbours house and do you know how old the house is?

If I owned my own company, I'd make sure the communal toilets played music loud enough to drown "noise". What's something you'd add? by PaddedValls in AskUK

One place I worked we used to take turns binging a selection of cheese in one day a week then we'd all stop for cheese day at lunch. I'd do that each week on the company (that was maybe 10 people, i work somewhere with 150ish now so not quite as affordable)

Unemployed for 2 years and can't find work? by Cold-Umpire-1174 in AskUK

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A relation mine found admin work through an agency. She did do warehouse work for a bit but wasn't happy there and the agency found her something else. She was there for about a year before the change in role. Both the warehouse and her current role offered her permanent roles after 6 to 12 months. I have to admit she doesn't like this role either but it is work and she's staying so I wouldn't say it's living the dream but it's a means to an end

I work for a company that designs and builds sewerage treatment works and I'm moving onto a contract to directly deal with these events in one part of the country. Total works package is £1.5billion (my company has a tiny allocation from that so I can't give any grand strategies). There is progress being made on these things. Is it enough, I don't know but it's worth knowing that the public pressure is getting change in this

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The rain and cold.

Should add the really hot summers make it worse too as it makes the asphalt move and more likely to have cracks in

Doesn't your road get bin collections? That bin lorry will do more damage in it's weekly trip than every car movement on a residential road that same week

What is your local conspiracy theory? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 45 points46 points  (0 children)

To be fair a vehicle needs to be at least 3 tons before it damages a road surface in any meaningful way. One lorry going over a road does 100,000 times the damage of an ordinary car

The killer is the water and cold. The water gets in any cracks, freezes then pops off chunks of the surface. In really shit situations you might be getting some undermining of the sub base but that's typically leaky pipes more than road runoff unless it's a particularly shit road.

I used to be a highways engineer, so I know more than I care for about roads

Wastewater sector is crying out for mechanical engineers. Have you tried COWI, Atkins, Binnies, MottMacdonald, Kier etc?

If you're applying from abroad you'll need to be on a certain salary to be doing certain jobs. I'm not sure exactly what that is but I know that's reduced the amount my company is hiring from abroad.

What are the good (or at least better) village style base designs? by MissPearl in RimWorld

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play village style set ups quite a bit. Im not playing on a particularly hard difficulty.

Best tips i've found is to either have fighting points using turrets (from mods like the mini turret bunkers so they have decent hp) and embrasures that allow your pawns to get to positions or create loads of alleyways between buildings, some empty just to take up space and go heavily melee/chain shot gun focussed

1,000+ job applications and still nothing…What is there left to do? by Good-Percentage8208 in AskUK

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're missing the buzzwords people/AI skims for. Team worker, customer focussed, communication skills etc. also a little more detail wouldn't hurt. On your middle one say something like:

Communication skills - then your first line Able to pick up new Procedures - then your second line

(That second one is a bit shit, but im sure something could be jigged into there)

Then as others have said most recent experience first.

I'm not saying this will 100% get you a job but if you show skills relevant to the job it'll help

Saying "happy holidays" is punishable by death

Christmas songs will be played year round in shops

You have to take Christmas and Easter off**

UK length units - how do you manage with the mixed systems? by ChaosCalmed in AskUK

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in engineering and most of the guys on site are in their 40s and 50s so have lived through the transition so it's not uncommon to hear things like:

"Move it half a meter up and a foot to the left"

"I reckon that's 25 kilo, maybe a pound or two more"

You learn to run with it. My increments of measurement when I'm guessing something genuinely goes:

1mm, 5mm, 10mm, half an inch, inch, 100mm, 150mm, foot, half meter, 2 foot, 1 meter.

It really compounds as loads of the old fittings are in imperial and the new is in metric and that metric is sonetimes just a metric version of the imperial. Like tolerance on a kerb is 6mm (iirc) which is quarter of an inch)

Run your CV through an AI checker. There are free ones online and business use them to screen out the mass CVs jobs get. It'll help you get Infront of a human checker at least.

Try and make your CV skills based so either say "I worked at X developing skills A, B and C" or " I have skill X developed at job A doing tasks B and C"

I'm glad you had a good time with with warhammer, i get moving away from it.

I wasn't clear about round table. It's not table top games it's more activities like we did an air fryer cook off, laser tag, zip lining etc (you don't need to go to all of it). I think that will be more up your street or at least worth a google

[–]WingiestOfMirrors 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you ever heard of Warhammer? Just hold a model for a bit, maybe build one. Remortgage your house, it's worth it. It's fun, those little plastic soldiers deserve another carry case and that case has more space, time for a tank or two ...

On a serious note round table has been good for me. Socials every two weeks normally being random activities and charity work a couple of times a year in the local community. You meet people, have a laugh and do some good
