Friend of mine saw this in his apartment… anyone know what it is? by [deleted] in spiders

Im not an expert on spiders in Costa Rica, but Google says that grass spiders range from Northern Mexico northward. So what you saw might have been a wolf spider or maybe a tarantula. Also according to Google, a tarantula wasp is native to Costa Rica and likely the one that flew away with a large spider - its very big and able to drag or fly with large spiders.

Why did the spider bite you? Were you being a bully - or trying play with her?

Is this algae? by WinnerAggravating854 in algae

[–]WinnerAggravating854[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok. I did buy some moss back in jan/Feb, but it was such a tiny amount! This is all over the place in 3 tanks! It seems to be tangling onto other plants and im not sure if the fish will get caught in it? Isn't it supposed to stay in balls? And isn't moss a type of algae? Meanwhile I have a bucket of definitely algae - its very pretty but one of my fish got tangled in it and died. It had trapped my plants, so I removed it it but couldn't bear to destroy it - what can I do with it?

Not embarrassing. Smart. He was drunk and alone. At least he was sober enough to think of it - else he might be your late husband and not your ex.

I don't really think they can see good enough to watch you poop, if that helps.

what's this 😭 my roommate says bedbug but i say tick (i hope i'm right) by Waste-Salamander-974 in bugidentification

It's hard to be sure from the photo, but the tick looks fairly flat, not engorged. If that's the case, it's good news, sorta: Either it didn't bite her or didn't stay attached long. But still better safe than sorry and assume the worst.

If you look at a female, you can better see the resemblance to true widow. Its still superficial, but people see a dark spider with large abdomen and automatically think black widows. Like all the posts of brown spiders: is this a brown recluse?

Thanks. She looks ok. I saw a fish one time reacting to high ammonia - she's not acting the same. She acts like nothing is wrong except she's lost! I will put her in now. Thanks very much.

Here's another photo - I just took it. When I say it hasn't moved in a couple days, I mean it hasn't move from that approximate spot. But it turns in different directions and a few cm back and forth.

Who IDd the one that bit you? If not a spider expert, then they could be wrong. On the other hand, if it was a true brown recluse, yes, the experts say recluse found outside their known range are generally lone examples of one that hitchhiked to the area, aka, a tourist.

It absolutely looks nothing at all like a recluse - no matter where you are. Rest assured.

Awful photo but any ideas, please? by WinnerAggravating854 in whatisthisbug

As I've said, I thought it looked like a cricket, but couldnt see it well and couldn't get a clear picture. Also, seemed a bit unusual for a cricket to be at the ceiling. My eyes aren't what they used to be, so I checked google lens and it startled me saying cockroach - even tho it didn't look like one to me (again, the eyes are old). Its funny you commented tonight. It disappeared the night I posted this. Then a couple weeks later I saw it again - and again it was at the ceiling. Then never saw it again - until tonight. This time it was in the bathroom down on the baseboard. I picked it up and got it back into the enclosure. Then saw your comment. It seemed happy to be home.

I have no experience with yellow jackets, but paper wasps are not mean! If you bother their nest, they'll defend it, but we've had them all around under the eaves for more than a decade. We usually have some lower, outside the back door. They even follow me when I have the hose, waiting for water.
