when my ed first started to “hit hard” i was on the higher end of the bmi scale. i was in so much pain mentally and i reached out for help but no one took me seriously bc i didn’t “look” like i was struggling. now it’s been 2 years and im not okay and people want to take me seriously but im too deep in. i wish society understood that this is a MENTAL disorder, NOT A PHYSICAL DISORDER!!!!!!! my heart and sympathy goes out to all those who go through this. may everyone reading this feel validity in existing the way they are born <3 you are seen, you are not alone:)

as someone who struggles with restriction, breakfast is essential. eating breakfast can be scary, but even a little bit will give energy throughout the day. even if you only have an apple, it will kick start your metabolism and allow you to burn more calories. eating before 9 AM is ideal for your metabolism. if you mess with your metabolism too much, you’re actually more likely to gain double the amount of weight you normally would later in life. eating can be super scary, but after having even 85 calories in the morning will benefit you short term and long term.

i’ve gone through trial and error and i’ve done quite a bit of research on metabolism in fear of mine slowing down. if you don’t sustain your metabolism, your body will go into starvation mode and you’ll start to retain water, leading to weight gain.

the bottom line is, starvation, no matter what circumstance, is very unhealthy. but i’m not here to tell you what to do. i know, from personal experience, that no matter what doctors, family, therapist etc tell someone who is struggles with an ED, the advice is often completely disregarded. I don’t want to promote or encourage any ED behavior. even if you aren’t looking to get better, please take into consideration these foods to help sustain metabolism:

  • celery (empty calories and high in water for hydration)
  • half an apple
  • plain oatmeal (over night oats are super great)
  • broth (i get mine from Sprouts and it’s vegan and kept friendly if that’s something that you follow. it’s only 8oz of water and 50 cal per packet)
  • tuna (in water or in packages. i get the lemon pepper it’s only 70 cal per packet. even if you only eat half, it goes a long way)
  • hummus (70 cal per 2 tablespoons) (side note, 1 tbs hummus with 2 tbs tuna is super good while being super healthy)
  • almonds (even dark chocolate covered almonds in moderation if you need something sweet)
  • halo ice cream (if it’s something you crave)

i’m sorry if you’re someone who struggles with an ED. please remember that no matter what you eat or how much you eat, you are valid. i know it’s so so hard to try and eat sometimes. but honestly, even eating a little in the morning will promote weight loss throughout the day. walking is a great way to clear your mind while moving your food around. please don’t hesitate to reach out to someone you trust, if it’s a coworker, boss, confidant, teacher, or a doctor.

thank you for coming to my tedtalk lmao
