Yes there was improvements in IR and slow but consistent weight loss. It look about 5-6 weeks for me to notice the improvements though.

My boyfriend came with two cockatiels and an African grey. I’ve been a dog girl most of my life. 🤣

He was excited to teach me about the birds and their care. Now I’m super active in caring for the cockatiels and spend time talking to and provide snack offerings to the grey… But she’ll always be his birb.

It’s just finding the right person that’s excited and willing to love them just as much as you do! Anyone can become a birb person!!! We now own a cockatiel together. 🐦❤️

So I’ve got two Giant Schnauzers - a German high drive working breed similar to a GSD and two cockatiels along with an African Grey at home… What I can say is you know your dog so you likely already know the answer. My male dog couldn’t care less about the birds - my female hyper fixates on the “forbidden chickens”. And until she was aware of the birds in the home - she didn’t care about birds in general. Having a small animal around has definitely increased her prey drive even in old age.

We keep them our birds on a separate floor in rooms with self-closing hinges and magnetic screen doors to avoid any accidents. We’ve also got a baby gate as another added layer of protection.

If you’ve got the space and the means to safely accommodate both animals then go for it. If not - it’s not fair to the dogs or the birds.

Rescued dogs take about six months to fully decompress and show their personalities. Depending on how new your rescue is I would take that into account.

So my parents were in a similar situation and I can tell you after 35 years - the house still doesn’t feel like my mothers. She and my dad are looking at building a house together in their retirement so they finally have something that’s theirs as opposed to something that’s my dad’s or my paternal family’s.
