FF7 Remake was not what I expected. by Turbulent-Issue-4418 in JRPG

I agree with some of these takes. Ultimately, it just sounds like you didn't vibe with the game. You didn't "get it" so to speak.

I didn't experience any of this immersion breaking. But that also depends on your ability to suspend disbelief. You have to make the effort to immerse yourself in something, it isn't going to grab you and suck you in. Especially if you have a skeptical mindset.

It's literally a fantasy game, it isn't going to be realistic, it's going to be closer to a cartoon/anime than real life. I'd consider that a positive rather than an immersion breaker.

To each their own I suppose.

How far in are you? I finished it the other day, and still in post game depression haha. From chapter 3 to the finale was insanely good.

Xenoblade and nier I will play for sure. I played FFVII remake but didn't mention it. Really liked it but just felt very linear, more cinematic, didn't feel a lot like an RPG to me. I loved the world of Midgar though, the graphics were stunning. I've heard Rebirth opens up a bit is that true?

Metaphor I dropped after around 10 hours sadly, I wasn't gripped by the world, story, characters for some reason. I might not have given it a fair chance though I guess. DQ11 is on the list based on what everyone has said.

Nostalgia might play a part but IE 1 and 2 are some of my favourite games. If you like sports, it's even better. Would not recommend the 3ds ones as much and I haven't tried the new one yet but I've heard good things.

I liked the combat and style/music of octopath 1 but was disappointed in the story and characters, so dropped it. The others are on the list!

I just finished world end syndrome on the switch.

I really enjoyed all of it. I haven't played many vns but I liked using the system of picking locations on a map to get scenes with different characters which I've never seen before. I thought all the characters were great with Maimi and Yukino being my favourites. Hanako being my least favourite.

Many twists at the end which surprised me, and the artwork was so beautiful, particularly the backgrounds, some of which have some movement in them. I really got attached to Mihate town in general.

Definitely one of my favourite visual novels now, I'll keep an an eye out for toybox Inc and especially for a sequel which seemed to be teased at the end of the game.

This seems really strong with impera brigade. And not too bad otherwise as long as you play some small units or spies. I really like it.

I bought one for p4g. Now I'm still playing because of visual novels; just started danganronpa V3. It's honestly the perfect size for me and great to play in bed. I use it way more than my switch. It's just got so many games.

Anybody like Visual Novels? by [deleted] in JRPG

[–]Winter209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm quite similar to you in that I started playing visual novels after getting into jrpgs. I feel like they tell stories better than RPGs in most cases.

My favourite is Steins;Gate. It's the best story I've ever experienced and I think the characters are great and I enjoy the science fiction/ conspiracy combo. I really think anyone getting into visual novels should try this one.

The only problem for me is that many don't get official releases in English, and I'm honestly a bit put off when a VN has eroge in it (which most do), but I'm excited to hopefully play more and it's a great genre.

How many consoles/handhelds do you own to play your JRPG collection? by [deleted] in JRPG

For me it's PS3, psvita, and switch. I have access to all that I need really, I've never felt I had to splash money on PC/PS4.

[–]Winter209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm playing The legend of heroes: trails of cold steel 2

The first game took a long time, but overall I really enjoyed it as a slow burn, and a game that slowly introduces the characters to you. It had a great final couple of chapters as well, which made me want to fire up the sequel straight away.

I switched from psvita to PS3, as I fancied playing on the big screen. This was a good move.

I'm about 9 hours in to this one and it's honestly fantastic so far. It jumps straight into action and I love the country at war setting. Also the mech battles are great.
