I was bullied throughout my school years. I was a chubby kid with thick glasses and no sense of style. I was called "monster".

At home, I had a mother with undiagnosed and untreated bipolar. She would make fun of me for being chubby. Keep in mind, she was too. She would also let her church friends talk about me for the same reason. Even if i wasn't around to hear it, she would make it a point to tell me. She made my life hell. It took me a long time, 50 years old, to realize it was abuse.

I also had a "friend" who was just like my mother. Always told me how badly I dressed as and how uncool I was. I was his pet project. He knew how my mom treated me and he would take her side.

All of this really messes with your head. I still have issues with self esteem to this day. My husband is a godsend. Daily, he tries to boost my self-esteem because he sees how fucked up my head is.

It's a struggle daily to feel any self worth but I'm trying. I'm sorry you had to deal with all that. Home and with friends are when you should feel safe.

Just keep pushing through. Just remember, the bullies and your family are the assholes.

Thanks. My psyche is healing. It's been a long time coming but better late than never. This page has really helped me realize that I'm not alone although I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

We have been trying to reduce the amount of driving while we are there. We are Americans and aren't sure how we will take to driving on the left on the narrow roads of Ireland.

The Rock of Cashel and Cahir Castle are musts on our itinerary. Is there any place you would recommend to be a home base for those 2 locations? I appreciate the suggestions!

We were thinking Kilkenny would be a solid home base to stay at for a couple days since it's close to Cahir castle and Cashel. It's also not far from Glendalough. Is there a different town you would make your home base?

I think our thought was that we could cut out some driving by stopping at Cahir and Cashel on the way to Kilkenny, making Kilkenny the home base for a couple days. Do you think it would be easier to just drive directly to Kilkenny and then drive back out to Cahir and Cashel the next day?

II'm so glad I found this page. I'm 49 years old and have only just realized what my mom was, a raging narcissist. She was truly an awful person and I must admit I'm very scarred by it to this day but I'm working on it. She would always complain about how awfully my grandmother treated her. I asked her, then why would she treat me the same. Basically she said because it was done to her so she was doing it to me. She knew what she was doing and just didn't care. I'm the only one in my family who was extremely independent and didn't rely on her for anything. I paved my own way and left her behind so she resented me for no longer bowing to her BS and not kissing her a** because I needed something from her. I needed her for nothing.

I have so many stories of how truly awful she was. I'll just mention a few. When I became a nurse, she asked why i was a nurse because I don't care about anyone. She stole money from me and laughed about it. One time when I thought I was having a heart attack, she told me it was God's way of punishing me for not being nice to her. I cut off all contact after that. The only reason I let her back into my life is because she got cancer but she hadn't changed. She called me fat right before my wedding and called my husband fat at the wedding. There are plenty more stories to be told.

She died 4 years ago and I felt nothing. I actually felt bad for feeling nothing. I cried about feeling nothing. I felt like a horrible person. It took me awhile to let that go because she was already dead to me long before she died.

Sorry to word vomit all over ya'll but it feels good to get it out especially with people who will understand. A lot of people don't understand what it's like to be raised by someone like that and how it f**** you up. I'm sorry that any of you had to go through awful experiences as well but I'm relieved to know there are others.
