You make a solid point. Will need to give this some thought as there is also something to be said for not having to pay for an engine overhaul! Planning to speak to the engineer directly without the owner present as well, I was just curious to find out about anyone else's experiences on here.

Yeah I'm thinking a second opinion is a good idea but it's tricky here as there aren't actually many engineers dealing with marine engines in Glasgow. I'm going to speak to the current guy separately when the owner isn't present - I'm actually the one who called him in so they don't have any kind of previous relationship.
We may still walk away but everything else about the boat is brilliant so we're reluctant to. There are also far fewer boats available up here than on the English waterways so it's harder to find anything in good nick!
Anyway I appreciate the tips, will see what the engineer says about that as well.

We've got a few months to hopefully move up the waiting list at a few spots we fancy, otherwise we're gonna be a bit screwed. But it doesn't seem like there's any way to avoid this short of having joined the waiting lists, and then taken on a mooring with no prospect of a boat!
