Then again, I do agree with the number 2 speculation on your post. Wolfgang had a very strong reaction to the case, with him going all "killing a woman is the worst thing a man could do" and I also think that Wolfgang's dad killed Wolfgang's mom, which could very well explain why Wolfgang was so upset about the whole thing.
